On the topic of law school, Nick’s roommate from the University of Montana will be swearing him into his new position as the Judge of the 16th Judicial Circuit in Montana. That’s Sidney Thomas, Chief Circuit Judge of the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals. “In college, neither of us would have ever thought we would...

  • Knudsen Seizes Opportunity

    Mark Hebert, For The Courier|Mar 9, 2016

In January, Malta's Casey James Knudsen announced he would run for Montana's 33rd House District Seat and though he has always been interested in politics, he never thought he'd be a candidate at this point in his life.  "I always thought about running, but I always thought it would be later in life," Knudsen said. "But you have to take the opportunity when it presents itself. You never know when there will be another open seat." The "open seat" Knudsen references came when Mike Lang, R-Malta,...

The department intends to work the county heavily to prevent parties where underage drinking and drug use may occur. The next several months will see the sheriff’s department putting a focus on the safety of our community’s young adults. Georgie Kulczyk, The Courier|Mar 9, 2016

If you aren't proud of the Scottie girls basketball team, then you haven't been paying attention. The Lady Scotties traveled to Choteau for the Northern B Divisional Tournament this past weekend, and they certainly left their mark. For Coach Kolstad, the tournament was a success. "We got about as much out of the girls that we could have. Every one of them contributed and it was a great team effort," he said. "We peaked at the right time and I am so proud of them." Glasgow 53, Rocky Boy 39 The...

  • The Last Puck Has Dropped for the U19 Lady Ice Dawgs

    Georgie Kulczyk, The Courier|Mar 9, 2016

Coming off a state championship in Montana, the U19 Lady Ice Dawgs had high hopes for the NDAHA state tournament this past weekend. It wasn’t meant to be however, as the girls faced some stiff competition and placed 6th out of the 12 teams in the tournament. Mayport 2, Glasgow 0 In their first game of the tournament, the U19 girls matched up against the Mayport Ice Dawgs. For the most part, it was an uneventful contest. Glasgow was unable to find the back of the net during the contest and Mayport scored their two goals in the third period....

  • ElCorDel's 9-Pin No-Tap Tourney

    Gwendolyne Honrud, The Courier|Mar 9, 2016

The annual 9 Pin No-Tap Tournament at ElCorDel Lanes is one of the most anticipated bowling tournaments of the year and did not disappoint. Balls were rolling, pins were flying, drinks were flowing and laughter was pealing. Typically, the evening is a chance for bowlers from all leagues to get together for friendly competition. The structure of the tournament is changed from regular scoring so that a hit of 9 pins counts as a strike. It is not unusual to see a “300 game” or more. Names are drawn for teams of two, usually with one man and...

The same day kicks off the first, exciting rounds of the NCAA basketball tournament — March Madness. Flying under the radar that same week is an event that deserves much but...

  • An Ageless Question

    Virgil Vaupel, Thanks For Listening|Mar 9, 2016

Let’s take a look back in history to Ronald Reagan’s reign as POTUS. He was a half-month short of being 70 years old when he was sworn in the first time. There were no outward signs of the loss of mental acuity in the first four years of his presidency other than the fact that he really didn’t wear the pants in the family letting Nancy pretty much control him. But that didn’t effect his running the country ... much. However he was 74 years old when he took the reins in 1985 making him 78 when he left office. He had been diagnosed with...

  • Is Sportsmanship A Thing of the Past?

    Georgie Kulczyk, Soapbox Soliloquy|Mar 9, 2016

We’ve all seen them: bad calls or no-calls by referees at basketball games, as well as games that have gotten “out of control” with athletes sustaining serious injuries as a result. We’ve also seen athletes display inappropriate behavior, coaches bullying or intimidating student athletes, and parents and fans shouting at referees and reacting poorly to perceived – or even obvious bad calls. As a society, we have seemingly decided that it’s okay to behave badly at sporting events – and seldom do we apologize for it or even take...
