The Glasgow volleyball team started their 2021 season in the traditional way – at the Choteau Invitational. Last year’s tournament was canceled due to the coronavirus pandemic, as were all the big tournaments which hurt the team according to head coach Somer Hoerster. Though, one might be forgiven for not noticing given how well the team played in their season opener. Glasgow came up against some tough competition but gave better than they received, finishing in fifth place after making the gold bracket and with a 7-5 overall record. The fi...

"I didn't prepare the guys as well as I should have," he ruminated. "As a coach I failed the team so that loss is on me." While Barnett critiqued himself, he was generous with praise for his team. "We had...

  • Reminder in the Field this Hunting Season:

    Sep 1, 2021

FOR THE COURIER GLASGOW-Although most hunters respect the land, property, and wildlife they are hunting, others may not. The Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks Region 6 Citizens Advisory Council, recognizing that this is an ongoing issue, raised the need to annually remind hunters to be good stewards of the land and respect both private and public property.  Every hunting season, there are reports of vandalizing of Block Management Area (BMA) boxes, hunters driving off road, trespassing, hunters being shot over, littering, livestock being shot,...

  • Upland gamebird hunting in northeast Montana could be challenging this year

    Sep 1, 2021

FOR THE COURIER GLASGOW- Biologists for Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks are expecting that many areas of the region will be challenging for upland bird hunting this fall. However, some areas with good habitat conditions should have fair bird populations for hunters prepared to find them. Habitat conditions, spring adult populations, and recent brood observations vary widely across the region for all species. Most noticeably, the severe drought has negatively impacted vegetation throughout the season and has likely led to a decrease in nest and...

While the COVID-19 pandemic rages on, the United States is in a much better position than other countries, says one recent visitor from the Philippines. "I think America, compared to the Philippines, is very far [along in beating] COVID," Alvicher Penido, a native of Manila, told The Courier wall walking along main street last week. "Everybody in the Philippines is panicking. You can't go out without masks. You cannot go out without face shields. They will take you to jail." Penido has been in...

  • Fear of Death

    Chris McDaniel, Courier Publisher|Sep 1, 2021

Portions of our countrymen have been at a near fever pitch of panic since the first wave of COVID-19 invaded Washington state in early 2020. What are they so afraid of? Is it those who refuse to get vaccinated or wear masks? No, such folks flexing their rights are just a physical scapegoat, a convenient target upon which can be laid the palpable fear and anger prompted by circumstances largely out of the control of anyone. So what is it then? It is death itself. It is interesting to note that...

  • Drought, Stress and Civility

    Paul Cornwell, Valley County|Sep 1, 2021

Many times drought, stress and civility don't travel together. If I heard any complaints about water delivery in 2016 it was probably from too much of it. In a year like 2021, it has been very difficult to deliver water through a canal system that had a very limited supply of water and also a limited capability for delivery through the complete system. I have been on Antelope Creek in Valley County for 70 years, and I don't remember any other year when the creek didn't even trickle in the...

  • When I Grow Up, I Want to Be?

    Tyler Edwards, GPD Interim Chief|Sep 1, 2021

A lot of children are asked "the question" throughout their adolescence 'What do you want do you want to be when you grow up?' A common response when I was going to school was firefighter, police officer and astronaut. Given the current media coverage and political climate the response of police officer is fading in our youth. I would like to walk you on my path to becoming a Glasgow Police Officer. When I was a young Scottie running around bleeding the red and white plaid, I was frequently...
