  • Fort Peck Vet Recalls Life of Service

    James Walling, The Courier|May 20, 2015

Joe Carson might as well be Joe Peck. He's the closest thing to a living embodiment of everything the town of Fort Peck has come to represent. The affable veteran is calm, stoic but cheerful, and proud of the area that he and his wife Mary Ann have called home since May 2, 1959. His memories are far from sensational. When asked how he feels about the Army so many years after his experiences in World War II, he replies simply and emphatically, "They gave me a good job." It's hard to imagine a...

  • The Dream Comes to Life, Honoring Our Vets

    Bonnie Davidson, The Courier|May 20, 2015

Five years of hard work is finally bringing fruition to a dream. Construction is set to take place just after the Memorial Day holiday to officially break ground in Fort Peck. It's been a long road for the board and committee of the Northeast Montana Veterans Park, but after raising over $500,000 from businesses and individuals the first phase of construction will take place this summer, with the hopes of being completed by Veteran's Day this year. "While this first phase will not complete the...

  • Eastern State Drug Prosecution Program Comes to a Close

    Bonnie Davidson, The Courier|May 20, 2015

As funding was cut, funding was not renewed for the drug prosecution program that helped 17 eastern counties in Montana. The program helped create forms, documentation and provided research for law enforcement and attorneys. Valley County Attorney Nick Murnion explained that the funding came from JAG (Justice Assistance Grant) and the trainings and resources that came from the two years the program ran have been invaluable. As the coordinator of the program, Diane Cochran, prepares to finish up the program, she’s providing trainings, a drug p...

  • 10 Years of Bonnie City Blues And Brews Gets a Little Blue Grass

    Bonnie Davidson, The Courier|May 20, 2015

It's become a tradition that several locals look forward to each year to the Bonnie City Blues and Brews Festival put on by the Glasgow Chamber of Commerce and Agriculture. This year more brews were available, over 40 different brews were on tap. Red Lodge, Meadow Lark, Uuber Brew, Madison River and more brewers had a tap with more than one brew to try. While the crowd enjoyed their brews, they also had unlimited grazing food provided by Food Services and Sysco. The Cottonwood Inn allowed them t... Full story

  • HONOR ROLL OF VALLEY COUNTY WAR CASUALTIES

    Bonnie Davidson, The Courier|May 20, 2015

While Memorial Day has become a popular weekend to kick off the summer festivities, it's a day that we set aside to honor the fallen. Wreaths and flags are left at gravesites all across the country to show respect to the fallen soldiers. Be sure to take a few moments over the weekend to remember those lost during conflicts both past and present. Following is an honor roll of Valley County soldiers who died in action during U.S. wars. Most were from Glasgow, but other hometowns are listed next...

  • Remembering the Forgotten

    Bonnie Davidson, Bonnie & Box Of Chocolates|May 20, 2015

Last year I wrote a little bit about remembering those who never made it home on Memorial Day. If you don’t realize the big difference between Veteran’s Day and Memorial Day, talk to any service member that saw combat. Memorial Day we remember those who were lost, those who were killed in battle. Sometimes those who were lost in wars long before are forgotten. As relatives die off and decades pass by, sometimes graves are passed by, stories are lost. Sometimes families have moved on and don’t have the opportunity to visit those headstones. Just...

  • Simpler Times

    Sandy Laumeyer, Just A Thought|May 20, 2015

A longtime friend, Bill, sends me a trivia question each day. So far I’ve managed to answer each one correctly. One of the more recent questions was to give the name of a game he described. the answer was jacks, a game I played for hours on end either by myself or with friends when I was a child. In commenting that I had given the right answer, Bill said it’s sad how video games and computer games have become so popular. He noted how, when we were children, we could entertain ourselves for hours and hours using our imagination. In the winter, a...

  • When Farming Was Hard

    Gwen Cornwell, Remember When|May 20, 2015

It is the time of year when most farmers are working to get crops planted if they are not already in. Observing some of the huge outfits that are currently used for most field work made me think of what it must have been like for my father’s and grandfather’s generation. Are there any retired farmers, or for that matter, ranchers, that remember putting in their wheat and barley? Or preparing hay ground for the season, that remember not fertilizing? That is right, no commercial fertilizer. That probably meant there was no need for soil sam...

  • Astronomy or Astrology? You Decide

James Walling, Notes from the Editor|May 20, 2015

Astrology columns drive me crazy. People love them, I know, but it's not science. And these things are often in a newspaper, so even though every reader knows full well that the stars are about as reliable as a fortune cookie when it comes to the subject of, say, one's personal destiny, it still looks official somehow. Sanctioned even. That seems ridiculous to me and makes me worry about the state of things generally. One alternative is an astronomy column. I've been hunting around for a few stargazers with a background in actual science to chi...

  • Who Should Be Allowed In

    Virgil Vaupel, Thanks For Listening|May 20, 2015

This column is in response to Lih-An Yang's op-ed piece in last week's Glasgow Courier. My point is this: Had Ms. Yang researched some of my columns on immigration reform she would have seen I fully favor immediate citizenship for those folks who were brought into the US illegally, or in their mothers' womb. I favor immediate citizenship for those who have gone through elementary, high school and college here and have been productive, law-abiding tax-paying citizens. The same for those who have been in the military fighting for the “Stars a...

  • Sally Jo Haynie

    May 20, 2015

The world changed for the better on Jan. 22, 1982, when Sally Jo (Page) Haynie was born into the Steve and Michele (Etchart) Page family. Named for her Godparents, Sarah Etchart and Joe Etchart, she was the caboose of four children and she kept the whole family on its toes. Nicknamed "Cyclone Sally" at an early age, for what would later develop into the fierce independence with which she lived life her own way, she gave a little piece of her sweet and sassy self to all she encountered. She grew...

  • Lyndon 'Lyn' Amestoy

    May 20, 2015

Lyndon "Lyn" Amestoy of Spokane, Wash., 60, died on Thursday, May 7, 2015, in an airplane that had landed in the Spokane River to avoid hitting people and houses on the ground. He would want little fanfare about himself and would say, "Keep it simple, keep it sweet." Here goes: He was born to Fred Amestoy and Helen Amestoy Robbins in Glasgow, Mont., on July 9, 1954, but it was in Missoula that he had spent most of his life. He graduated from Sentinel High School in 1973, married Charleene...

  • Class C Meet Qualifies Athletes To State

    Georgie Kulczyk, The Courier|May 20, 2015

Class C coaches wear many hats. They are coaches first, but also play the role of parent, counselor, referee, physical therapist, and more. Sometimes they have to fake it 'til they make it. There was a little of that this season for Ryen Falkenstern, of Nashua, and Lisa Beus, of Hinsdale. Falkenstern initially was going to be the track and field coach just for the lady Porcupines. He stepped up for the boys' team when things didn't work out with the prospective coach for them. This is Beus'...

  • Scottie Softball Sets The Bar, Heading To State

    Lih-An Yang, The Courier|May 20, 2015

"It'd be nice to be in the championship," said Sadie Sukut, one of the two senior leaders on the Glasgow softball team. "Yeah. A trophy would be sweet," said Autumn Hopkins, the other senior. The 2015 team started out as a young and inexperienced team. But over the course of the season, they have battled, rallied, set goals and repeatedly reached them. They hold an impressive 17-2 record going into state this weekend. Head coach Mark Falcon wants his squad to "finish strong". After beating Cut...

  • Even Through the Wind and Rain, Scotties Go to State

    Georgie Kulczyk, The Courier|May 20, 2015

We raise 'em right in Montana. There's no doubt in my mind. It was truly a miserable day at the North/East B divisional track meet on Saturday, but from the athletes to the volunteers, not a single "whine" was heard. If anyone was whining, it all stopped when the Glasgow boys and girls swept the meet and brought home the titles of divisional champs (the first time in school history that both boys and girls claimed the divisional title two years in a row). It was all smiles and hugs after that....

  • If You Care, Leave Them There

    MT FWP|May 20, 2015

Every spring Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks issues a message to Montanans to leave new born fawns, birds, and other infant wildlife where people find them. "If you care, leave them there," said Ron Aasheim, spokesman for Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks in Helena. Aasheim said that most birds, for instance, learn to fly from the ground up, and not from the nest. "Whether you find a fawn or fledgling bird under a tree in a neighbor's yard or bunny under a bush it's important to know that wild...

  • State Golfers Don't Place At The Top, But Show A Personal Best

    Georgie Kulczyk, The Courier|May 20, 2015

Scottie girl golfers gained some wonderful experience last week at the state golf meet – including the part when they had 50-plus people watching them on the first tee box. At least that’s what Coach Dave Riggin thought was wonderful. “They’ve never experienced that before. The whole thing was great for the returning girls to experience,” said Riggin. “With two brand new girls and a second year golfer on the team this year, we will still have a young team next season.” As for their overall performance, the Scottie girls placed eleventh out...
