  • Where's the Beef? It's Local

    Gwendolyne Honrud, The Courier|May 13, 2020

While Valley County has not a single confirmed case of COVID-19, the local community is still feeling the effects of the global pandemic in other ways. The county went through the state-wide shelter-in-place directive ordered by Governor Steve Bullock and many local businesses shuttered their doors temporarily. Even before the directive, local grocery stores saw a surge of stockpiling, struggling to get and keep some items, such as toilet paper, on the shelves. Now another shortage is happening...

  • Ice Cream Truck Makes Comeback in Glasgow Community

    Michelle Bigelbach, The Courier|May 13, 2020

Children and families in Glasgow saw a new addition to their neighborhood last week, the Jump N Buck Ice Cream Truck driven by Kevin Taylor. Over 30 years since Taylor first had an ice cream truck with his brother, Shayne, Taylor is making a comeback to provide treats and smiles to the Glasgow community. "Most people remember the ice cream truck from when they were a kid, not realizing that it was also me then," laughed Taylor. Even though the previous ice cream truck still exists, there is a...

  • Glasgow City-County Library Serves The Community

    May 13, 2020

Dear Editor, Growing up in metro-Detroit area, I am used to beautifully landscaped, three-story high libraries packed with books in any subject, as well as resources and programs that engaged families and helped to foster the love of reading in the community. That being said, in moving to Glasgow, it has been an adjustment for me in many areas to do life in a small community. However, in all my many high expectations for what a library should other, our own Glasgow Public Library has more than...

  • Williams Addressing Communities

    May 13, 2020

Dear Editor, I so regret that while all of us were sheltered in place, I wasn't able to visit every county in person during this primary election season. I am writing to share why I am running for governor. Montana is at a crossroads, facing an urgent set of new challenges: Health insurance companies and big pharma are taking advantage of Montana families, and politicians in Washington are sitting on the sidelines. Public education is under attack by those who want to take our hard-earned tax...

  • Comply With Tribal Governments To Prevent The Spread

    May 13, 2020

Dear Editor, We, the below signed members of the State-Tribal Relations Committee, the Montana Legislature's liaison with tribal governments, write to encourage the public, residents and nonresidents alike, to comply with restrictions tribal governments adopt to prevent the spread of COVID-19. Although public highways and gas stations remain open across reservations, some tribal governments restrict access to their communities through signage, check points, and road blocks to buffer vulnerable,...

  • Taking The Census

    May 13, 2020

Dear Editor, Many of us are itching, probably more than ever, to experience all the great things that long summer days in Montana bring. One simple but critically important thing to do before heading out is to complete the Census. The number of individuals counted determines the amount of state funding allocated by the government. In Montana, for every person that's not counted, we stand to lose $20,000 per person over the next 10 years. That's funding for hospitals, schools, and...

  • Planting And Cooking

    Mary Honrud, For the Courier|May 13, 2020

Some planting has been done up north, both in the garden and out in the wheat fields. Dennis finished pre-working the many, many acres that will be seeded (and fertilized) this summer. He's now started up the air seeder. There was a slight delay between those two operations due to the .41" of rain last Friday. He says he'll be "self-isolated" in the tractor for the next two weeks. That leaves me with plenty of time to do my thing. Of course, I get interrupted regularly: he'll need my help to...

  • Roots Run Deep for Hinsdale Grads

Peggy Cornwell as told to Roubie Younkin, For the Courier|May 13, 2020

Small communities enjoy the comradely of shared history and traditions. They remain strong through ideals of generations of families sharing similar values, secrets, traditions, triumphs and tragedy. These communities are enhanced through the years as family trees branch with the introduction of spouses or business people. These "recruits" bring with them new ideas, their own traditions and create a dynamic society that grows and thrives. The Hinsdale High School Class of 2020 has only four...

  • Rising To The Next Level

    Michelle Bigelbach, The Courier|May 13, 2020

Glasgow High School senior Ali Cunningham has had quite a unique senior year. At the beginning of the school year she balanced practices and meets as a cross country runner in addition to cheer practices and cheering at football games as a Scottie cheerleader. She continued cheering during the winter sports season for basketball and then started to prepare for the track and field spring season before COVID-19 caused the cancellation of all spring sports. While balancing being involved in...

    A.J. Etherington, The Courier|May 13, 2020

Glasgow natives Brenner and Jason Flaten snatched the first-place prize at the 2020 Yellowstone Challenge Catfish Tournament this past weekend. This year 51 boats took over the waters of America's longest free-flowing river to net massive cats, but only one team could become the champs. The Flatens managed a basket of 29...

  • Wrong Ballots Arrive For Some Glasgow Residents

    A.J. Etherington, The Courier|May 13, 2020

It was May 11, primary ballots had just arrived, and Kevin Taylor was looking forward to voting for his candidate of choice in the Montana HD 33 representative race, but there was a problem. Taylor's preferred candidate was not on his ballot. Figuring he must have gotten a state-wide ballot and would later get the local ballot he filled out his votes and returned it by mail. Then he talked to Valley County Republican Central Committee Chair Sara Swanson about the vote, asking if he would see...
