  • The Stage is Set For A New Season at FPST

    A.J. Etherington, The Courier|Mar 31, 2021

It was a different kind of year for the Fort Peck Summer Theatre and the Fort Peck Fine Arts Council thanks to COVID. Had everything been normal in 2020 and 2021, they would have been hosting their 20th annual auction fundraiser, but last year they were forced to cancel their 19th and this year they were forced to change the format, broaden the timeline and compensate for an upcoming season that will take place amid the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. In a normal year, the fundraiser includes a...

  • For the Majority, Not the Wealthy Few

    Mar 31, 2021

Dear Editor, The Gianforte Administration and the GOP majority in the legislature campaigned and were elected because they said they would bring jobs to Montana, support small businesses and improve our infrastructure. What is actually happening is multiple tax breaks for the wealthy, and budget cuts for the rest of us. There are bills cutting services for Montanans with disabilities, seniors, Child Protective Services, and other essential public services. This comes in the middle of a pandemic...

  • Targeted COVID Package Will Reopen Our Economy

    Jon Tester, US Senator|Mar 31, 2021

One year into this pandemic, Montanans are finally starting to see the light at the end of the tunnel. Our vaccines are safe and effective, COVID cases are falling thanks to the tireless efforts of our frontline health care workers, and Spring is on the horizon. But even with this good news, we still have work to do before we get through the worst public health and economic crisis in generations. Over the past year I've had hundreds of conversations with families, workers, doctors, educators,...

  • CONTINUING FEDERAL GRAZING DISTRICT'S WATER RIGHTS SAGA

Ron Stoneberg, Valley County Conservation District|Mar 31, 2021

The Valley County Conservation District has been trying to alert their constituents, and others, about how the federal government is succeeding in taking the vested water rights away from the Federal Grazing District allotment holders without any just compensation. The feds were aided by our Montana Water Court and the Montana Supreme Court which both ruled in favor of the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) in the Beaver Creek (south Phillips and Valley counties) adjudication. These courts may...

This month, American Prairie Reserve shared with the Phillips County Conservation District that, as before, our bison herd has been given a clean bill of health. As Senior Bison Restoration Manager for American Prairie, I am one of several members of our team that's living and working in Phillips County, supporting the day-to-day management of the bison herds that graze on our properties. The health of our herds is just as important to us as it is to our neighbors in Phillips County. Earlier...

  • Watercolor Workshop at Wheatgrass

    LEITH DEWEESE, For the Courier|Mar 31, 2021

One spring afternoon I was driving home to Saint Marie. I happened to hear about a watercolor workshop at the Cottonwood. I'd done a lot of acrylics but very little Watercolor, so I signed up. That's where I met Lance Johnson. Over the next 13 years, he has become my mentor, my friend and eventually a fellow colleague. Lance Johnson has roots in Wolf Point but works out of Billings. A professional artist, he specializes in landscapes, wildlife, and Native American themes. His work can be found...

  • Springtime in Montana

    Mary Honrud, For the Courier|Mar 31, 2021

It’s definitely a Montana-style spring going on: spits of rain one day, flurries of snow the next. Between the two, we measured .08” of moisture last week, and every bit counts. The snow Friday evening measured about 3” of wet fluff. It was only 25° Saturday morning, with a stiff breeze, so I didn’t attempt making a snowman. Of course, the almost constant winds are busy sucking that much desired moisture right back up into the sky and blowing it away. Dennis tells me the soil temperature at a depth of 4” is still only 40°, so it’s much t...

  • Scottie Golf Opens Season in Shelby

    Gwendolyne Honrud, The Courier|Mar 31, 2021

The Glasgow Scottie golf team traveled across the Hi-Line to Shelby late last week to kick off their 2021 season. As is often the case with Spring Sports in Montana, the Scotties ran into some inclement weather. "It was a super cold day," Coach Todd Truscott said of Friday, which saw rain and snow. Despite what Mother Nature threw at them, the Scottie Boys posted a third-place finish led by Riley Smith, who tied for fourth place with a score of 87 in varsity competition. Conrad and Fairfield...

    Tim Phillips, For the Courier|Mar 31, 2021

Of course we are very excited to be back at for track and field this spring, after missing 2020. We’re disappointed we had some upper classmen that didn’t come out - they could have helped our teams a lot! But we are just SO excited by the athletes who are here! We have very young teams, but they are also eager to learn and have been a joy to coach over the last few weeks! Our returning seniors this year include Carl Zabrocki in the distance events, Sam Rodgriguez in the throws and Colter Cumber in the sprints and vault. Our lone senior for...
