  • Child Abuse Stats Soar

    James Walling, The Courier|Mar 30, 2016

According to statistics from Montana’s Supreme Court, there were 42 new child abuse cases reported in Valley County in 2015. That is more new cases of child abuse than in 2013 and 2014 combined, and 55 percent more cases than 2012, the previous worst year on record. The flood of cases has swamped the child welfare system, according to Mark Douglass, local director for Court Appointed Special Advocates, an organization which trains and coordinates everyday citizens to speak out for abused children. “CASA in Montana began on the Hi-Line, but in...

  • Bike Peddler

    Parker Kulczyk, The Courier|Mar 30, 2016

Ron Guttenberg is 82 years old, but he is one of the busiest and most active 82 year-olds I have met. Guttenberg has been fixing bicycles since his children had their first two-wheelers. His first project for someone other than his own kids, was for a neighbor girl whom he found crying on his front porch because her bike was broken. Since then, Guttenberg has developed a knack for restoring bicycles to "just like new." After retiring from State Farm Insurance over a decade ago, Guttenberg and...

  • Feda Scholarship Adds Areas of Study, Additional Award

    Maggan Walstad, For The Courier|Mar 30, 2016

Two changes to the application requirements for the Feda Scholarship for the Trades become effective with this spring’s applications, Ken Oster announced this week. He chairs the Valley County Community Foundation, which administers the scholarship. Remaining unchanged is the scholarship award to a Valley County high school senior graduating in 2016 with plans to attend a trade school. The first change allows previous recipients to apply for a second scholarship, providing they have successfully completed one semester of study. The second c...

  • Wheatgrass Artist of the Month: Jason Brock

    Tess Fahlgren, For The Courier|Mar 30, 2016

Wheatgrass Arts and Gallery in downtown Glasgow will be holding a First Friday Art Exhibit of Wolf Point artist Jason Brock’s paintings this Friday evening, April 1, at 5:30. Brock was born and raised in Wolf Point, where in grade school he fell in love with doodling - an interest that became a love for art, eventually pushing him to attend Dickinson State University in pursuit of an art degree. Since returning to Wolf Point from Dickinson, however, family life superseded his art and his return to creativity has mostly been, as he says, ...

  • Doris Dunster

    Mar 30, 2016

Doris (Nickels) Dunster, 92, passed away Thursday, March 24, 2016, in Snohomish, Wash. Though she had lived in Washington since 1967, she was a Montana girl to the end. She loved to tell stories of Montana life growing up with her brothers and sisters, often laughing so hard she couldn't finish her sentences. She was born to Herman "H.J." and Lydia Nickels in Glasgow, Aug. 1, 1924, and grew up on their ranch they had built up from a homestead on the Missouri River near Ft. Peck. She graduated from Nashua High School. During WWII, she was a... Full story

  • Hillside Letters

    Georgie Kulczyk, The Courier|Mar 30, 2016

GEORGIE KULCZYK THE COURIER School pride and civic identity is pervasive in Valley County. Among other things, area residents take pride in our athletic and academic programs, the hardiness and generosity of our residents, and the unique offerings our area has to offer. Traditions at sporting events and visual identifiers are undeniably prevalent in our communities. One visual identifier that residents typically associate with school and community pride are the geoglyphs commonly known as...

  • Changing The World In The Past 85 Years

    Virgil Vaupel, Thanks For Listening|Mar 30, 2016

I can’t give you the name of my source...yet. It would ruin the surprise, if that’s what we want to call it after the blanket is thrown back and the subject is shown. I will, however tell you it’s a magazine that celebrated its 85th anniversary last year or so. My idea is to get people to opine as to what “thing” they think has been most disruptive, or world-changing in the time the magazine has been alive. I’ll give you some of the things listed according to the editors and writers of the mag, which I will simply call MagX for now. Some o...

  • Bits and Puzzle Pieces

    sandy Laumeyer, Just a Thought|Mar 30, 2016

It’s bits and pieces time again. Yesterday, Easter Sunday, was an absolutely beautiful day. The joy of the day was enhanced many times over through a large family gathering, phone calls to and from relatives, and the making of lots of new memories. Cameras were recording the day in pictures that will be looked at and talked about over and over in years to come. Because of the number of people attending the family dinner, it was held in the basement of Queen of Angels Church in Nashua. As the food was being set out, I watched people visiting and...

  • Good Eggs Gone By

    Gwen Cornwell, Remember When|Mar 30, 2016

Have you ever wondered why the Easter Bunny and Easter eggs are a part of our Easter observance and tradition? I did take the time to check that out this morning before going on this little trip down memory lane. The wonders of the present day; I can sit in my chair with a cup of coffee and get all of that information. While I have absolutely convinced myself that I am not going to get a “Smart Phone,” I also realize how much easier they have made “instant knowledge.” I now have an interpretation I like, and for those of you who have let that q...

  • Stuck in the Middle

    Parker Kulczyk, Juvenescent Jots|Mar 30, 2016

As a 19 year old living in Glasgow, I belong to quite an interesting demographic: a community full of Republicans and a generation full of Democrats. Old people vote conservative because they hate taxes and young people vote liberal because they want free college. I’m neither. In my opinion, one should not base their political vote on another’s opinion, but their own. How am I supposed to support a conservative candidate who denies climate change, or a liberal candidate supporting gun control laws? As a firm believer in fact (or science, whi...

  • Time for the U.S. to get Serious About Defeating ISIS

    Ryan Zinke, Political Opinion|Mar 30, 2016

Terrorism-related deaths are up 800 percent in the past five years according to a new report. That’s nearly 30,000 people who are killed per year by terrorists. While suicide bombers and gunmen have been killing civilians around the globe almost constantly, it was last week’s coordinated terrorist attacks by ISIS in Brussels that violently shook the world awake. I believe in the power of prayer for the victims and their families, but I also believe in the power of U.S. leadership against this evil. It’s time for the U.S. to get serious about...

  • Minding Memes

    Mary Honrud, Sowing Notions|Mar 30, 2016

This past week, while checking out Facebook, where people keep their friends updated on their activities as well as share lame jokes and simplistic ideas, I ran across this meme: “When both the Republican Establishment and the Democratic Establishment attack the same candidate, then you know you’ve found your guy.” The only reason I saw it, having no desire to visit that page, was because a friend shared it, and another friend liked it. My immediate response was, “Seriously? A man who claims to be Christian, yet has commented he’d ‘do’ his...
