The 2015 Class C Girls State Basketball Tournament is in the books. Eight teams from the four corners of this very large state converged at the Adams Center, Dahlberg Arena on the campus of the University of Montana under the 'M' for a thre- day tournament to see who would take home the heavy hardware. A petition may have made a difference as the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers looks to add an additional 20 campsites to the Fort Peck area. The petition with over 1,000 signatures was supported by Two Rivers Economic Growth, Glasgow Chamber of Commerce and Agriculture, Missouri River Country Tourism Board and the Tourism Business Improvement District. For the first time, Montana has declared a day for retired educators. The local Montana Retired Educators Association group, pictured at left with Mayor Becky Erickson, met Monday to have a proclamation signed by Erickson. The official Montana Retired Educator Day is Thursday, March 12. Old tires and landfills are a poor combination. Tires that are mixed into the landfill site act just like balloons coming up through the debris, so, the landfill attempts to keep them separate. Because of the space issues in the landfill, grinding tires or baling them is preferred to burying them. Currently the Valley County Landfill is charging dealers to dispose of their old tires. Once again I am searching for information. I have had several readers ask me about a talc mine located in the North Country, which I assume could be anywhere from Baylor to the Canadian Border, maybe from Richland to Thoeny. This is an unknown to me. I know of coal mines that were used by many for winter heat, but I have never heard of anyone mining talc. Joseph Lee James Sugg, 33, a U.S. Marine Corps veteran and former Glasgow resident, passed away Monday, March 2, 2015, in Anaheim Calif. A memorial service will be hald at a later date. With spring on the way, flooding season comes around the Valley County area. Glasgow and the surrounding commmunities are no stranger to floods as history has recorded several such events over more than 100 years. This photo was taken in April 1907 and is a view of 3rd Avenue South and 6th Street South. The 19U Lady Ice Dawgs traveled to Bismarck, N.D., this past weekend to compete in the North Dakota Amateur Hockey Association State Tournament. The Lady Ice Dawgs were going into the tournament ranked seventh after the regular season standings. On Friday night the Lady Ice Dawgs faced the No. 2 ranked Bismarck Capitals on their home ice. Basketball season isn't over quite yet. The signup deadline is this Friday, March 13, for the 17th annual Jeff Jurgens Memorial Basketball Tournament at venues across Glasgow. Tourney time is March 20-22. The tournament, a fixture on the community sports calendar, continues as a way to remember Jeff Jurgens, 1985-98, who was active in sports and especially enjoyed youth basketball tournaments.
