  • Albertsons Buys Former Shopko Property

    A.J. Etherington, The Courier|Jan 15, 2020

A special warranty deed filed with the Valley County Clerk and Recorder’s Office states that the property formerly owned by Shopko has been transferred to Albertsons LLC. The transfer presumably sets up the possibility that the local Albertsons grocery store may be relocating to the vacant box store, although no one from Albertsons has returned phone calls for information. In addition to the deed, signed on Jan. 3 and recorded by the Clerk and Recorder on Jan. 8, the County Treasurer’s Office also confirmed that the second half of the...

  • GHS Reps Classic Poets at P.O.L.

    Gwendolyne Honrud, The Courier|Jan 15, 2020

Glasgow High School held their annual Poetry Out Loud competition Jan. 6, in the Valley County Pioneer Museum. With a last-minute addition, a total of 25 students competed in this year's recitation contest. Tyler FitzSimmons added his name to the competition shortly before it was to start, and that decision led him to a first-place finish and the right to compete at the state-level contest. He recited 'Fairy-tale Logic' by A. E. Stallings. FitzSimmons will compete in the State Finals in Helena...

  • Arielle Chapman Earns Advanced Floral Design Cert

    Gwendolyne Honrud, The Courier|Jan 15, 2020

Arielle Chapman, of Glasgow Flower and Gift, recently received her advanced floral design certificate from the Floral Design Institute, joining owner Peggy Aakre and coworker Jasmine Freuh who have also received their certificates. Chapman's passion for her work is evident, a smile danced across her face as she worked on an arrangement, her blouse complemented by the yellow daisy in her hair. "Whenever I'm out and about," she laughed, "I have a flower on me somewhere, it seems." The advanced...

  • Stone's Next Battle

    A.J. Etherington, The Courier|Jan 15, 2020

When I met Joyce Stone for the first official time at Soma Dis Deli on Jan. 10, it was obvious that she was not like most of the political candidates I had interviewed in past and current races. She showed up at exactly the scheduled time, wearing blue jeans and a sweatshirt and carrying zero notes (not even a date book). Contrast that to one of the last interviews I did, where the cowboy persona was so crisp and fresh out of the box that the boots and jeans would have stood up on their own,...

  • EMTs Turn Out in Glasgow For STAT Air Training

    A.J. Etherington, The Courier|Jan 15, 2020

According to organizer and STAT Air Ambulance Clinical Nurse Manager Kyle Gibson, 65 people came out to attend a bi-annual continuing education training put on by the organization. Gibson described surprise and excitement at the large crowd that was over the 40-person estimate they had initially planned for. "We were planning on 40," said Gibson, "so we had to do some major changes to what we were doing." He said that since the classrooms in the upstairs area of the STAT Air hangar can only acco...

  • Working for Montana

    Jan 15, 2020

Dear Editor, As your U.S. Senator, it's been my top priority to bring Montana commonsense to Congress, and in spite of the partisan politics that exist in Washington D.C., I've been working across the aisle this past year to get results for Montanans. We recently secured the largest pay raise in nearly a decade for our troops, strengthened our southern border to protect our communities from illegal drugs, empowered law enforcement to combat Montana's growing meth crisis, protected the mission...

  • Montana Cowboy Hall of Fame

    Jan 15, 2020

Dear Editor, My Fellow Montanans, I feel compelled to bring to your attention an issue that should concern you. The Montana Cowboy Hall of Fame (MCHF) Board of Directors wasted nearly $1 million in taxpayer and contribution funds and no one has been held to account. The MCHF Board has lost the trust and support of Montanans. The membership dues have declined from its peak in 2013 of $41,527 (that was before the news of the Big Timber Debacle was made public) to net dues of $13,634 in 2018. Membe...

  • Legislative Week In Montana

    Jan 15, 2020

Dear Editor, This week, members of the Montana Legislature will head back to Helena to participate in "Legislative Week." This is an opportunity for our state lawmakers to continue to engage each other and the broader public in important policy topics on the minds of many Montanans. Just three short years ago, Montana faced massive cuts to the state budget, which decimated services across the state. As a result of the budget reductions, many communities lost access to behavioral health...

  • Together We Can Stop Human Trafficking in Montana

    Jan 15, 2020

Dear Editor, January 11th is Human Trafficking Awareness Day. Recently we have seen too many missing youths in Montana who may be human trafficking victims. Learning what we can do to stop this crime may help these, and other, victims of human trafficking. I am a registered nurse, domestic violence advocate, and prosecutor who has dedicated my career working for children and people in need. As a prosecutor I fought against human trafficking on the front lines: I stood up for children victimized...

  • Butchers and Meat Cutters Of The Past

    Gwen Cornwell, Remember When|Jan 15, 2020

I was flipping through a three-ring binder filled with newspaper clippings from the past, when the title of one of the clippings caught my eye, “Remember when???.” This was a clipping taken from the Glasgow Courier and covered memories of some of the local butchers and meat cutters of past years. How many of us remember days of head cheese, blood gravy, pickled pigs feet and hams and bacon actually smoked in a smoke house? Oh, remember when bacon was purchased with the rind? Maybe you remember the days before refrigeration and the use of...

According to Sgt. • O-Pine-Inated Report On Trees

    Mary Honrud, For the Courier|Jan 15, 2020

We're still vacationing in Florida, and watching lots of hockey. We did throw in a real circus last weekend. The contrast of the heat under the big top to the chill of ice arenas was similar to walking out of a warm home and into -30 degree temps. We ventured to Daytona on Jan. 12 to watch the middle grandson. He had two games: a tie and a big win. The youngest had games in Orlando. His dad took him. He is the goalie and notched a shut-out. The oldest played in Fort Myers and scored the winning...
