A new U.S. law went into effect at the end of 2019 prohibiting the sale of tobacco products to anyone under the age of 21. At its recent semi-annual meeting, trustees of the Glasgow High School Educational Trust awarded financial aid to seven GHS alumni who will be attending college or trade school during the spring 2020 semester. These seven are in addition to the 27 students who applied for and received awards last summer to help pay for both semesters of the 2019-2020 academic year. Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks will hold four public meetings in northeast Montana in January to gather comments on proposed hunting seasons and rules for the next two years. Interested hunters are encouraged to attend these meetings to hear the proposals, ask questions, and make comments. Marlene Faith (Ouren) Patterson, 88, passed away on Thursday, Jan. 2, 2020, at Bethel Lutheran Home in Williston, N.D., where she had resided since June of 2015. Cremation has taken place and burial will be at Lawndale Cemetery in Opheim, Mont., next to her parents in the summer of 2020. We are in sunny Florida, visiting our middle daughter and her family. Don't be jealous. The Glasgow Scottie Speech and Drama teams made their way to Sidney on Jan. 4 to compete in their annual invitational, which drew a large swathe of Class A, B and C schools from the region. The Nashua Porcupines hosted the North Country Mavericks on Jan. 3 in the Nashua gym. The boys' game saw lots of back and forth action starting in the second quarter, however the Porcupines couldn't catch up, losing 48-60. The Glasgow Scottie wrestlers braved weather and distance to take on 31 different schools at the Tom LeProwse Bozeman Invitational on Jan. 3 and 4 for the first set of bouts in the newly minted 2020 year. When it was all said and done, Glasgow had amassed enough points - 94 in all - to finish in the top half of schools at 12th place. The Scottie boys and girls basketball teams played a combination of four games over the last week meeting up with Poplar on their home court on Jan. 2 before heading to Glendive on Jan. 4 to take on the Red Devils. The Glasgow Ice Dawgs High School girls team traveled to Kalispell over the Christmas break to compete in the 19U Girls Winter Classic tournament. Glasgow went up against some tough teams from Bozeman, Missoula and Flathead in their four games of play, walking away from the tournament with one tie and three losses. Driving to town Sunday morning on our ice glazed roads made me think of days before four-wheel drive, front-wheel drive and all-wheel drive vehicles, like the days of using horses and the methods used for that type of transportation. My mind went to my early days and the things I can vaguely remember.
