  • Ringing in the New Year with Record-Setting Cold

    Ginevra Kirkland, For The Courier|Jan 3, 2018

Record-breaking weather was set around the area this weekend. An Arctic airmass moved into the area on Dec. 30 and began to lift on Tuesday, Jan. 2.  During that time, Glasgow’s high of -19 on New Years Day made it the coldest high ever recorded on that date. The previous coldest high on Jan 1 was -17 in 1928. The high of -20 on Dec 31, New Year’s Eve, was Glasgow coldest high since Feb 1, 2011, when the high was -21. For the last in important records set for the overall year: 2017 was officially the driest year on record for Glasgow with... Full story

  • Courthouse Square

    James Walling, The Courier|Jan 3, 2018

Balmy conditions on Jan. 2 had the usual suspects around Courthouse Square smiling. Commissioner Paul Tweten confirmed that Commissioner Bruce Peterson will continue as chairperson in 2018. All three commissioners were pleased to report that county roads are being cleared as usual, with minimal inconveniences and delays despite the record-setting cold. Commissioner Peterson and County Planner Renee Clampitt told the Courier that county residents waiting for channels 5.1, 5.2, and 5.3 of the Valley County TV District to resume consistent... Full story

  • Strommen Receives Dan R. Taylor Award

    James Walling, The Courier|Jan 3, 2018

Valley County Undersheriff Luke Strommen has received the Dan R. Taylor Award. Sheriff Vernon Buerkle told the Courier that Strommen, who has been with the department since 2009, was singled out for the numerous felony investigations he's played a role in, including Operation High Tide, which culminated in 17 felony arrests on drug charges in June, 2011. Buerkle also cited the Mary Strand case, on which Strommen teamed up with the FBI, and the Jay Witkowski homicide investigation. Strommen has... Full story

  • Literacy Raised, Chocolates Swapped

    James Walling, The Courier|Jan 3, 2018

Capitalizing on Toni Marie LaGree's goodwill and a bit of Icelandic lore, the Sean R. Heavey Gallery and The Loaded Toad in downtown Glasgow featured a white elephant book and chocolate swap on the afternoon of Dec. 23. The well-attended event was LaGree's brainchild, and she held court as the rules of the game were explained to the dozens of happy attendees who came out to show solidarity with area readers, the charms of chocolate, and increased literacy generally in a county with no brick and... Full story

  • Beekeeping Workshops

Shelley Mills, MSU Extension, For The Courier|Jan 3, 2018

With increased awareness of the importance of pollinators, bees and beekeeping has become much more mainstream today than 30 years ago. Three workshops – Beginning Beekeeping, In the Bee Yard, and Harvesting and Winterizing, were held on Saturdays in March, May and September, respectively. Bee enthusiasts from five counties attended the day-long workshops which included lunch, demonstrations and door prizes. During the first workshop, participants learned the basics of bee biology, plants and planting for foraging bees, and how to manage... Full story

  • Changes at the Gateway Club

    James Walling, The Courier|Jan 3, 2018

We all know how barren the dining scene can be in Valley County and elsewhere in the region, particularly with both Sam’s Supper Club and The Hanger closing up shop in Glasgow. So it’s big news that Fort Peck’s Gateway Club is running extremely smoothly as of December thanks to a change in management, new hours, and a new menu featuring hand cut steaks, quality seafood, and al dente veggies, etc., at an affordable price point. Beginning in December, owners Jaydee and Dustin Mortenson brought daughter Kaylee Mortenson on as general... Full story

  • Letter to the Editor

    Daryl Toews, Lustre, Mt.|Jan 3, 2018

I would like to thank the Long Term Care Task Force for coming to Lustre to share their concerns and possible solutions. I would like to support this effort. There are two concerns that were not addressed with clarity: 1). Will the election of new board members to Valley View Home Board be open to the public and will it be able to address sloppy management quickly? Non-profit boards have a reputation of doing well for a short period of time and then quickly moving to sloppiness. This situation will happen again. 2). The idea of a 10 mil... Full story

  • Invasive Weed Strategies

    Ag Expertise, MSU Extension|Jan 3, 2018

Narrow-leaf hawksbeard, a new invasive weed in northeastern Montana has become an increasing problem for area farmers and ranchers. Though technically a winter annual the weed has the ability to germinate whenever conditions are favorable, and can have several generations per year. It is extremely cold hardy and a prolific seed producer. It infests crops, rangeland, CRP, pastures, hay meadows and roadsides and waste areas. It has spread through six Montana Counties and into North Dakota. It is the Weed of the Year for North Dakota in 2018. Rese...

  • Republican Hopefuls

    Alec Carmichael, I Digress|Jan 3, 2018

The year to come is an election year and as such it is a great year for politicians, pundits, campaign strategists and politically oriented columnists like yours truly. The rest of you, on the other hand, will be forced to suffer through campaign ads and political stumps (assuming any of the candidates visit Glasgow more than once this time around, but I digress). For those of you not as enthralled by the gladiator show that is primaries and general elections the following should catch you up on the Republican hopefuls for the Senate...

  • Trump's Gift

    James Shipman, Valley County Voices|Jan 3, 2018
    1

After nearly a year in office, Donald Trump has finally achieved his first legislative victory. Just three days before Christmas, President Trump signed the Tax Cut and Jobs Act into law. He describes it as a “big, beautiful Christmas gift” to the American people. Trump and Republicans claim this overhaul will put more money back into the pockets of ordinary Americans, stimulate growth, and create jobs. Which is a bold statement, especially since numerous analyses show that the legislation will ultimately raise taxes on millions in the...
