  • Leaf Curl Ash Aphids a.k.a. Woolly Ash Aphids

    Shelley Mills, For the Courier|Jul 13, 2022

This spring we have been seeing a lot of samples in the office of ash trees with young leaves curling under and a funny white fluffy substance on them. This is the leaf curl aphid also known as the woolly ash aphid. This tiny insect infests and feeds on the newly emerging leaves and young stems of ash trees in the early spring. The aphid is tiny, about 1/8 inch; pear shaped and usually white to green. The bodies are covered in a white, waxy filament that gives them a cottony or woolly...

  • Free Tree Day Canceled

    Shelley Mills, For the Courier|May 6, 2020

It is with a heavy heart that we inform the public that there will be no Free Tree Day for 2020. The restrictions for crowd gathering prohibit us from holding this wonderful program. With the wonderful turnout we have had in the past of over 250 people, it just isn’t feasible for us to risk endangering the public, the Gumbo Gals garden club and ourselves. • Beware Bed Bugs

    Shelley Mills, MSU Extension|Feb 21, 2018

Anyone can get bed bugs - it is not a matter of cleanliness but more of transportation. They only need a place to hide and a human host to feed on. Bed bugs (Cimex lectularius) are wingless, oval, reddish-brown insects about ¼ inch long that feed primarily on the blood of humans. They are most often found around, or near the bed but when populations are large they may move to other rooms. They can live up to a year with females laying nearly 400 eggs during that time. The bite of bedbugs can leave a swollen, red, irritated welt usually in clust...
