Nashua's Joel Novak was appointed fire chief of the Nashua Fire Department at the fire hall on Dec. 19. He is heading into his fifth year with the department. Novak works full-time at the CHS elevator in Glasgow and is a longtime Nashua resident. Justin Wooley was elected assistant chief. He works for the city of Glasgow. The Glasgow Police Department is investigating a combined theft and act of vandalism reported Dec. 16 at Scottie Carwash on Highway 2 in Glasgow. According to the report, the incident occurred sometime between Dec. 15 and 16. The GPD’s Brien Gault told us that two inflatable Minion decorations were stolen by two individuals in a dark-colored vehicle with four doors. The individuals also damaged other seasonal decorations. Joy Guttenberg’s good (edible) works are known to many in the Glasgow area. That’s about to become truer still. Guttenberg’s Apple Trolley has moved next-door to Albertsons on Highway 2 into the space formerly occupied by The Worx. And no, she isn’t carrying on with scrapbooking or DVDs, but she is adding breakfast items to an already popular menu which includes some of the region’s very best sweets, soups and sandwich offerings. Christmas is coming, and nowhere more so than Saco, Mont. According to Heidi Pippin, Santa, hay rides, ice skating, hot soup/chili, hot chocolate/cider, and adult beverages are all on offer at the Hi-Line community festivities scheduled for Dec. 16. Beginning at Pip’s Diner with pancakes and Santa from 9-11 a.m., sleigh rides begin at 1 p.m., and ice skating is open all day. A variety of skates will be available for use. A date has been set for the Tallow Creek Christmas Program after lots of consultation, according to Sierra Stoneberg-Holt. That date is Sat., Dec. 23, at 3 p.m. There will be a program followed by potluck treats. Valley County Sheriff Vernon Buerkle reports a quiet holiday weekend locally, at least with regard to significant accidents and arrests. County Commissioner Paul Tweten tells us that Great West Engineering made their final inspections Nov. 28 on the bridge over Beaver Creek on Milk River Road near Hinsdale. County Planner Renee Clampitt still has Valley County atlas books for sale (complete with township, range and communities), as well as wall maps and folding maps featuring the county on one side and towns on the other. Local man William Kratzer was arrested Nov. 14 west of Glasgow. According to County Attorney Dylan Jensen, Kratzer has been charged with felony strangulation of a partner or family member. He was released Nov. 16 on a $25,000 bond with court dates pending. The Senior Citizen’s Center in Glasgow is once again hosting the Valley County Thanksgiving Day dinner. Don’t be confused by the venue. This is a community dinner and all are invited. The time is set for Nov. 23, from noon to 2 p.m., at 328 4th Street South. Over the past 26 years, almost 4,500 people have enjoyed the event. Montana Department of Transportation Director Mike Tooley announced on Nov. 16 that MDT is scrapping the Grass Range round-a-bout project. Bob Sivertsen, one of the leaders of the effort to stop the round-a-bout, was pleased. “The people really stepped up,” said Stivertsen, adding that people have been, “signing petitions in opposition to the ill-conceived, unneeded and costly project and MDT finally listened.” Sivertsen, along with Senator Mike Lang of Malta and Rep. A driver and child emerged with minor injuries after a rollover crash at mile marker 508 on Highway 2 around 8 a.m. on Nov. 13, according to Valley County Sheriff Vernon Buerkle. Inclement weather including ice and fog were factors in the crash, which occurred while the driver was attempting to pass slower traffic. Now in its seventeenth year, the Wild Bunch Art Show is coming to the Cottonwood Inn Nov. 17-19. Wild Bunch artists include Leith DeWeese, Whitney Paju, Todd Mandeville and Connie Tveten, among others, as well as bronze sculptors Pam Harr and Harvey Rattey. Valley County Sheriff Vernon Buerkle confirms that jail numbers are on the rise. The number of inmates rose from 13 to 41 this week, mainly due to transfers from Yellowstone, Missoula and Ravalli counties. Kaitlin Cusker had a close call on Highway 2 at Nashua on Nov. 4. Snow and ice combined to make a routine southbound turn a genuine cause for alarm for the local rancher. Instead of completing the turn through town, Cusker's truck and trailer veered across the center lane and ended up on the north side of the highway facing the opposite direction. The program for Veterans Day begins at 10:30 a.m. at the Glasgow Civic Center on Saturday, Nov. 11. The speaker will be Paul Kanning, an American veteran and rancher from Flaxville, Mont. The Valley County Health Department’s Connie Boreson updated us on funding for the new drug incinerator we mentioned last week. Until recently, the contents of the county’s red drug collection box at Courthouse Square were sent to Billings for disposal. That option is no longer available, so Boreson, in coordination with the Valley County Sheriff’s Office, helped fill a need by securing $4,200 in funding from a Department of Health and Human Services grant via the organization’s Systems Health Department. The rumors are true: The Kootenai National Forest was chosen to provide a tree to appear on the west lawn of the U.S. Capitol for the Christmas season. This is the second tree provided to the capital from the National Forest. The tree will be cut on Wednesday, Nov. 8, and readied for the 3,000-mile expedition, which includes a series of stops in Montana communities, culminating with the official tree lighting in early December. According to Valley County Sheriff Vernon Buerkle, the jail had a dramatic reduction in the number of inmates over the past week. The number of beds filled dropped by a total of 27 from a recent high of 50 down to just 35. The bulk of the reduction came as a result of Department of Corrections activity and inmate transfers. The Valley County Health Department and the Sheriff’s Office have added an incinerator to their toolkit for collecting and destroying illegal and prescription drugs. According to Glasgow's Allison Nichols, the Cascade Quartet is making a scheduled stop at Glasgow High School Oct. 31, with a full concert performance at GHS auditorium. The Glasgow Downtown Association is sponsoring Treat Street again this year on Tuesday, Oct. 31, as part of area Halloween festivities. The idea is to increase foot traffic in stores, encouraging shoppers and families to trick or treat in and around downtown businesses. The Annual Ag Appreciation Banquet/Night of Honors and the New Trends in Agriculture day-long seminar came together at the Valley Event Center Oct. 13. The event was emceed by Chamber of Commerce Ag Committee chairperson Haylie Shipp with evident sincerity and poise. Law Enforcement James Walling the Courier Larry Edward Gilbert II was sentenced on four misdemeanor charges at the Valley County Courthouse on Oct. 16. The charges included criminal mischief, possession of dangerous drugs and drug paraphernalia, and carrying a concealed weapon. Sentencing included combined fines of $750, court conditions, and jail time of up to a year, with all but 80 days suspended. Gilbert is currently being held at the jail on additional charges.
