Serving Proudly As The Voice Of Valley County Since 1913

Edwin "Lyle" Carden

Edwin "Lyle" Carden, 91, passed away on Monday, June 25, 2018, at his home in Westlake Village, Calif.

A private family gathering and celebration of life is planned.

The eldest of six children, he was born in 1926 in Glasgow, Mont. He was raised in Glasgow and the surrounding area and graduated from Glasgow High School. Upon graduation, he enlisted in the Navy in the Naval Aviation program. He subsequently earned his engineering degree from Montana State at Bozeman.

He spent the latter 20 years of his professional career in Denver, Colo., where he worked as a civil engineer with the Bureau of Reclamation overseeing contracts and procurements. There, he and his wife raised their four children.

An adventurer at heart, Lyle earned his pilot's license in his early thirties. After his retirement from the Bureau in 1982, he lived part-time in southern California, pursuing his passion for sailing. He owned two sailboats during that time, sailing around the coastline of Southern California and twice to Mexico. He often traveled to Glasgow and Denver with his fifth wheel for lengthy stays, prior to returning to and permanently residing in Thousand Oaks/Westlake Village in southern California.

He was an avid reader, particularly books on math and physics, and he was especially fond of riding his Vespa, which he did, daily, until the age of 89. He loved his lattes from Peet's Coffee and was always ready for a robust debate about the origins of the universe.

A dedicated, kind and loving father, Lyle is survived by his four children, Leslie O'Connor (Larry), Doug Carden, Robin Beverly (Kirk) and Lisa Carden; seven grandchildren, Matt and Sean O'Connor, Elspeth, Bret, Madeline and Andrew Carden and Brian Beverly; two great-grandchildren, Kyara O'Connor and Luke Beverly; and his ex-wife, Joanne Carden. He is also survived by two sisters, Carole Binette (Andy) and Sandy Carden, along with several nieces and nephews.
