This spring, Montana FFA Foundation awarded over $60,000 in scholarships and grants to FFA members and chapters throughout the state. Hinsdale FFA was one of three FAA chapters to be awarded a Helping Hands grant and FFA member Mickayla Johnson walked away with scholarship funds.
Helping Hands Grants are awarded to local FFA chapters who will be implementing community service projects. One of the priorities of the grant is to collaborate with community stakeholders and Hinsdale FFA will be doing just that.
According to FFA director Patti Armbrister, the funds will be used to purchase new event tables and a cart so the school can more efficently conduct events at the Hinsdale school, which in turn will allow FFA students to learn and participate in these events.This grant is very competitive as the 97 FFA chapters in Montana compete for a number of grants through the FFA Foundation. This is the second year the Hinsdale FFA has received this grant from the Foundation.
The Hinsdale Chapter Members do quite a bit of community service, most recently maintaining and improving the FFA park as well as cleaning up Main Street, including planting flowers. Armbrsiter states she writes two to three grants per year to “make sure we have the funds so the members can learn by doing.”
In addition to handing out grants to FFA chapters, 43 students were also recipients of scholarships for college and leadership development, including recent Hinsdale graduate Mickayla Johnson. The Foudation awarded her a $1,000 Association of Montana Turf, Ornamental and Pest Professionals scholarship based upon her community service and FFA involvement.
In addition to recieving the state scholarship, Johnson was also awarded the Georgia M. Hellberg Memorial scholarship at the national level through the National FFA Organization in the amount of $5,000. This scholarship was one of 1,829 awarded through the National FFA Organization’s scholarship program this year. Currently 114 sponsors contribute more than $2.5 million to support scholarships for students.
Johnson has plans to attend the honors college at MSU-Bozeman to pursue a degree in conservation biology.
