Unshelved at GCCL: Library Options and Happenings

Things are busier than ever at the Glasgow City-County Library; this is also the time of year when the library staff are finalizing plans for the summer reading program (SRP).

This year’s musical themed SRP starts on Monday, June 18, and ends on Wednesday, July 25. There will be educational activities and programs for persons of all ages. As a highlight, the Pretty Iron Feather Dancers from Wolf Point are going to perform on Tuesday, July 24. These special guests will demonstrate their cultural dancing, drums and costumes. Alice from “Alice in Wonderland” will visit one of the story time hours to read to young children. As well, “Alice in Wonderland” will be performed by the Theatre for Young Audiences, comprised of the cast and crew of the Fort Peck Summer Theatre. The Museum of the Rockies is sending another science kit to the library, and this year they will match the musical theme. Registration is free, open to all ages, and will be available online starting June 11. Please look for more updates in the following weeks prior to our June 19 kickoff.

The Library Book Club met on April 17, at the library to discuss The Other Bolyen Girl by Philippa Gregory. The next book club meeting will be held on May 15, at the library to discuss People of the Book by Geraldine Brooks. The Library Book Club meetings are always held the third Tuesday of the month at 1 p.m. in the Horizon room at the library.

The library has over 3,000 DVDs in the collection, including popular series to movies and documentaries. Here are some DVDs we have added our “new to the library”- movie collection:

The Men Who Built America, a six-hour, four-part miniseries docudrama originally broadcast on the History Channel. This series profiles the lives of Cornelius Vanderbilt, John D. Rockefeller, Andrew Carnegie, J.P. Morgan and Henry Ford. It tells how these visionary men built their respective empires that helped shape and revolutionize the country. The series is directed by Patrick Reams and Ruán Magan and is narrated by Cambell Scott.

Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them. This magical adventure movie is directed by David Yates and is a spinoff prequel to the Harry Potter film series. It was produced and written by J.K. Rowling and inspired by her 2001 book of the same name. And the first movie in the Fantastic Beasts film series; the sequel is scheduled for release on Nov. 16, 2018, titled Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald.

Also on display at the library is American Assassin. It is an action-packed spy thriller movie involving agents that receive an assignment to investigate attacks on both military and civilian targets. Together, they discover a pattern of violence, leading them to join forces with a lethal Turkish agent to stop a mysterious operative that has a personal vendetta and wants to start global war.

For kids and fans of the Despicable Me animated movies; Despicable Me 3 is available for check out. This is a 3D computer-animated action comedy film produced by Illumination Entertainment.

Movies and other check out items can always be renewed if you aren’t quite done with them by their due date. Just call the library during regular business hours at 228-2731.

The library is open Monday - Thursday from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., Friday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Saturday 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., and closed on Sundays, as well as all major holidays.
