Remember When

Scrambling Under Your Desk

December 6, 2017

If you have listened to the news in recent days, you have no doubt heard about all of the North Korean conflict, which in turn has prompted the State of California to implement safety drills in schools. How many of you remember having similar drills in your local schools during the 50s? My history is a little hazy, but was that during the Korean War?

Regardless, there are some of you that will remember scrambling under your desk at the sound of the alarm. I have it pictured like the fire drills we used to do; only without the nice orderly lines the teachers had us in as we exited the building during fire drills. I am not sure how much protection our desks would have been, but I am sure they were more sturdy than the desks of today, and would have certainly been some protection.

And maybe the moral of this memory could be that we need to remember our history, continue being taught history, and remember that history does have a habit of repeating itself. This is a short memory, but one might want to brush up on their history lessons, and not to be an alarmist but Pearl Harbor Day is right around the corner.
