VCCF Funds Improvements at Boy Scout Park

On Aug. 20, 18 Boy Scouts and Scout supporters came out to assist Troop 861 Life Scout Garret Paju with his Eagle Scout Project at Boy Scout Park. The project consisted of stripping the current asphalt roof from the park's shower house, patching holes in the roof and placing a new steel roof on the structure along with other maintenance around the park. It took the group of volunteers the better part of the day to complete, and some final touch-ups were made on Aug. 21.

The funding for the project was provided by a grant from the Valley County Community Foundation who supplied $2,000 to the park. According to the non-profit that operates the park, Allies of Scouting, Board Member and Troop 861 Scoutmaster Mike Carney used just over half of the grant funds. "We still need to do the main cabin roof probably by the end of next year," said Carney adding, "that roof will likely need about $1,500 to complete."

Boy Scout Park is a plot of land along the Missouri River along the Nashua to Fort Peck Highway across from the Dredge Cuts. Carney stressed the parks use by youth oriented groups and activities, but added that the park is available to other groups for use. "The park is owned by the Corps of Engineers who want us to use it primarily for youth," said Carney. He added that the main source of funding is renting out the park for group or individual use.
