Gridiron Boys Defeat Glendive

Baker Here Friday

It was a long night for the Scotties, but productive nonetheless. The Scotties traveled to Glendive on Sept. 2 for their second away-game of the season, and came home with the win.

In a battle of two-point conversions, safeties, fumbles and penalties, the Scotties prevailed. The Red Devils dominated the first quarter of the game, scoring a touchdown and preventing the Scotties from gaining ground most of the time. The first quarter ended with a score of 6-0 in favor of the Red Devils. Heading into the second quarter, Glasgow was looking to make something happen, but before they could, Glendive found the end zone again and boosted their score with a two-point conversion. The Scotties began their scoring streak with Benji Phillips getting the ball to Trent Herbert, who ran a short five yards to earn the TD and put the Scotties on the board with six points.

With a fumble late in the second quarter, the Red Devils threw the door wide open, and the Scotties capitalized. Luke Breigenzer ran 23 yards for a TD off Phillips, followed by a two-point conversion by Cade Myrick to even things up 14-14 before the half ended.

Mother Nature threw a wrench in things before the second half of the game could begin, when a storm blew through and the game was halted for a mandatory waiting period due to lightning.

Once the teams hit the field to begin the third quarter, 90 minutes – give or take – had passed.

Although both teams managed to find the end zone in the second half, they seemed to struggle with the delay, racking up several penalties and lost yardage.

The Scotties took the lead with a safety after sacking the Red Devil's QB midway through the third, and finished the quarter on top with a score of 16 -14.

Phillips increased the Scotties' lead to 22-14 when he ran the ball in for a TD late in the fourth quarter. It looked like a win for Glasgow, but the Red Devils weren't giving up. They closed the gap with a TD and had the opportunity to tie up the contest with a two-point conversion. They tried. They failed. Scotties won 22-20.

The Scotties will face Baker at home on Friday, Sept. 9. Head coach Greg Liebelt is excited for the game. “It will be a huge game for us if we play well,” he said, adding that Baker is one of the top teams this year.
