Local Photographers Make the Most out of Epic Commute

Carlos Valle (pronounced VIE-yay) had been planning on a little downtime this winter, but his clients just won't leave him alone. The photographer regularly balances what must amount to one of the longest cross-country commutes (though Andrew McKean might have him beat) with family commitments here in Glasgow.

To give you an idea, here's how Valle described some of his travels in a recent email to the Courier:

"The year started with a bang and I shot out of Montana. I photographed a swim catalog, worked on a campaign for a car wax company, and captured a location wedding in Lake Arrowhead, California. Then we celebrated my daughter's 7th birthday with a beach party in Huntington Beach. After that, we traveled back to Montana with enough time to do laundry, say hi to a few friends and family, and enjoy my son's first pinewood derby race. Then back to California to work on a home furnishing catalog. Sun, beaches, and way too many hipsters."

Acting on a growing itch to enjoy some of the sights between Glasgow and the Pacific Coast, Valle opted to pass on the usual flight from California to make the journey home overland. For company, he picked up Glasgow's Sean Heavey in Las Vegas on the road to Zion National Park in Utah. Valle describes Heavey as, "A photographer who has opened my eyes and shown me a different perspective on photography."

At Grand Teton National Park in Wyoming, Valle and Heavey stood where the master, Ansel Adams, once stood. The former reflected, "The trees have grown since he stood there. We could just buy a postcard, but why?" Naturally, both men took homage photos. Many readers will have seen a selection on social media sites. Many more might consider stopping into the Heavey gallery and requesting a print or six.

The ambitious pair also indulged in a little snowmobiling in Yellowstone before stopping in Bozeman to rest and heading, as Valle put it, "home to our loved ones and reality."
