Mavericks Win by Free Throws in Lewistown

The Mavericks were in Lewistown last weekend for the Fergus Holiday Classic and proved that free throws can make or break a game. Their Friday night win against the Geraldine-Highwood Rivals was won by ten points – exactly the number of free throws made by the North Country boys. Saturday night's game against Broadus was more of the same. The 14 free throw points scored by the Mavericks were enough to earn them another win for the weekend.

Gaining the lead early in each game, the Mavericks never lost ground. Leading the scoring for the Mavericks against the Rivals was sophomore Trace Simonson with 21 points. Right behind him was Cache Younkin with 14. Contributing to the score as well were John McColly, 8; Wrangler Jones, 6; Channing Mavencamp, 4; Logan McColly, 3; and Robert Barche, 2.

The scoresheet for the Saturday game against the Hawks was more balanced. L. McColly claimed top spot for the team with 10 points. Also scoring: J. McColly, 8; Christian Menge and Younkin, 7; Chris Depuydt and Mavencamp, 6.

If the number of fouls were any indication, the Mavs played with less restraint during the second game than they did during the first. Compared to the nine fouls recorded on Friday night, the boys were creeping up on almost double that amount with 15 fouls on Saturday. Younkin was in jeopardy of fouling out with four fouls to his credit, but managed to avoid being sent to the bench.

The North Country boys will join the Lady Mavericks in contests against Dodson on Thursday night and in Glasgow to compete against the Scotties on Friday night.
