Scotties Building, Enjoying Tyra Time

The Glasgow Scotties open their conference schedule this weekend, but not before two more Class A games this week.

With a 3-0 early season record against higher Class A competition, coach Mark Falcon is looking for his softball team to keep up the good work, keep learning.

“Being as young as we are, we're getting experience and just have have to keep building,” Falcon told The Courier. “It's nice to see where we stand with Class A teams. Other teams have more experience, but we should be caught up by Divisionals.”

Falcon considers the Scotties a Top 3 team in the division, along with Conrad and Columbus.

This week, the team was scheduled to visit Sidney on Tuesday and host Havre at 4 p.m. Thursday at Jurgens Field in a rematch of Glasgow's 6-4 road win in the season opener.

Then the games start counting in the conference standings at Colstrip on Saturday, at Shepherd next Thursday, April 23, and the Columbus Invitational on April 24 and 25. Squeezed in between is a 3:30 p.m. April 21 game with visiting Williston, N.D.

GHS enters this busy stretch following last weekend's jamboree exhibition games at Belgrade and a convincing 6-1 win last Thursday over the Fergus Golden Eagles in Lewistown.

Pitcher Tyra Johnson went all seven innings in her two-hitter without giving up an earned run, striking out seven and walking none. She also went 2-for-3 at the plate with a pair of doubles.

The Eagles scored thanks to an error in the first, then it was Tyra Time for Glasgow's 2014 All-State sophomore starter. She's 3-0 on the season.

“We gave up one unearned run, then it was 1-2-3, 1-2-3,” Falcon said. “Tyra had a pretty good game.”

The winning margin could have been wider. The Scotties left eight runners on base, the Eagles two.

Also going 2-for-3 for Glasgow was Khloe Krumwiede, who hit a triple and drove in a run. Sadie Sukut went 1-for-4, Abbi Kolstad 1-for-3 (RBI), Lexi Nixdorf 0-for-3, Tiana Johnson 1-for-3, Kiauna Barstad 0-for-3 (RBI), Jordan Johnson 1-for3 and Teagan Fossum (RBI, 3B).

The Scotties put up three earned runs against Fergus pitcher Carley Carpenter, who struck out seven and walked four over six innings. Eagles Mikayla Comes and Jessica Kinderski each hit a single.

In the JV game, Scottie Rachel Boese hit the game winning walk-off RBI in a 14-13 win.

Falcon said the Belgrade jamboree gave him an opportunity to “get as many new kids in the games as possible and experiment with new pitchers.” Glasgow beat Hardin and lost to Belgrade, Missoula Loyola and GF Central.
