Edwin Hersel

Edwin "Ed" L. Hersel, 86, formerly of Richland, Mont., died Tuesday, March 31, 2015, in Billings with family by his side.

He was born April 17, 1928, at Tioga, N.D., to Ole and Inga (Sherry) Hersel.

As a young teenager, he left Tioga, going to live and farm with his uncles, Anton and Sivert Sherry, in the Richland community.

On Jan. 1, 1949, he was united in marriage to Martha M. Dighans at Peerless. They lived in the Coal Creek, Butte Creek, Peerless and Richland areas. They retired in 1998 and moved to Billings. Martha passed away March 3, 2002. Ed currently resided at Sweetwater Retirement and Canyon Creek Homes.

He served on many rural boards and committees throughout his lifetime. He enjoyed taking several moose hunting trips with friends into Canada. He loved to dance to a good old waltz, polka or 2-step. He also enjoyed attending livestock and farm auctions.

He was preceded in death by his wife and six siblings.

Survivors include children, Bernhard of Billings, Aquina Beck and her husband, Garry, of West Fargo, N.D., Leonard and his wife, Linda, and Andrew and his wife, Marjorie, both of Scobey; 13 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; a sister-in-law, Betty Hersel; and many nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, April 7, at St. Philips Catholic Church in Scobey with Pat Zabrocki officiating. Committal of ashes was in the Daniels County Cemetery. Music was provided by Carol Fouhy and Marie Fossen.

Waller Funeral Home of Scobey was in charge of arrangements.
