Qualifiers Meet Monday At GHS

It's An Opportunity For Scotties To Get To State, See How They Do In New Events

The Scottie Qualifiers Meet at GHS next week is looking like a box of chocolates. You just don't know what you're going to get.

But here they go. Montana spring weather permitting, the Glasgow track and field team will host a state qualifiers meet Monday, April 11, at Scottie Field. Running and field events begin at 4 p.m.

Scotties coach Tim Phillips told The Courier that he expects a number of other squads to send at least a few athletes with state qualifying aspirations. The lineup of competing schools, with a week to go, included the Porcupines of Nashua, Hays/Lodge Pole, Rocky Boy, Poplar, Harlem and Sidney. More could sign up.

GHS coaches also will use the meet to get a fresh look at some Scotties in events that are new to them.

"Maybe they can do some things we didn't think about," Phillips said.

Meanwhile, the coach hopes that the Scotties step it up Saturday at the Baker Invitational. He wants his teams, the boy and the girls, to win meets and rack up more state qualifiers as the season unfolds.

As it is, GHS has five state qualifiers to date. The newest is Chase Fossum. He made it comfortably with a long jump of 20 feet, 6.75 inches at the Wibaux Invitational in Glendive last Thursday. The qualifying standard is 19 feet, 11 inches.

"Chase had a couple of good jumps, so that was good to see," Phillips said.

With nice weather at Baker this weekend, Phillips said Fossum could have a shot at qualifying in the triple and high jumps as well. On Tuesday, the forecast for the Baker meet was a mix of sun and clouds with a high of 67.

At Wibaux, the weather was windy, snowy and cold, and Glasgow's overall performance didn't match its showing the previous week at its own invite. The girls placed second with 70 points, 14 behind host Baker, and the boys were fifth.

Phillips recognized a couple of distance runners for their efforts at Glendive:

• Walker Allen's fifth place time of 11:24.94 in the 3,200 meters was within a second of his personal record although he had just returned from the annual GHS student D.C. trip.

• Kerry Hoffman's fifth place time of 14:31.34 in the 3,200 meters was a mere 300 hundredths of 1 second behind her PR.

"It was one of the smartest races that she's run," Phillips said.

Winning events at Glendive were Amanda Wolff in the 800 meters and Josie Braaten in the 1,600 and 3,200 meters. Neither was seriously challenged.

Scottie Notes

• The other Scottie state qualifiers so far are Braaten in the 3,200 meters, Benji Phillips in javelin and Dana Hughes in shot put and discuss.

• Except for the distance runners, Monday's cold, windy conditions forced practice indoors for the Scotties.

• Forty-six young student-athletes are going out for the junior high track team – 22 eighth-graders and 24 seventh-graders.
