Six Wrestlers Make State

Seven Scottie wrestlers qualified for State at some point during the MHSA Eastern B/C Divisional Tournament at Shepherd. Six are going.

Advancing are Kasey Seyfert at 120 pounds (second), Mick Reyling at 126 (second), Cody King at 138 (second), Jake Hentges at 145 (third), Tony Kaiser at 160 (third) and Tanner Roness at 182 (fourth).

The other momentary qualifier, Matt Reyling, placed second at 103 before what Scottie coach Jory Casterline described as "one of life's great injustices" occurred.

The hard-working freshman, who emerged this season as a rising star with wins over ranked competition, was disqualified after receiving his medal on the podium Saturday due to a ruled biting incident in the first period of his championship match. He was stripped of his medal, ordered out of the gym and banned from State at Billings MetraPark this Friday and Saturday.

"It was a call by an official that we have to live with," Casterline said. "The kid (Matt Reyling) was on a roll, ranked No. 3 in the state. It's not in his character to do something like that. He's the kind of kid that every coach wants to coach. He does everything on his own."

Casterline said the incident occurred when the eventual 103 champion, Huntley Project's Parker Snyder, applied a cross face hold with his arm in Reyling's mouth.

"There were teeth marks, but it was not consistent to a bite mark," Casterline said. "It was good, physical wrestling. He did what he was taught to ... He's resilient and will come back. He's crushed, but he's handling it well. I have no doubt that this will give him an edge and make him a more fierce competitor."

The matter was addressed at a team meeting.

"You know what, we went into the practice room (Monday) night," Casterline said. "We discussed what happened to Matt, and we're moving on. Now it's time to focus on the six kids who are going to State. We needs to regroup and focus, and we'll be fine."

The Scotties leave Thursday for Billings. Casterline hopes a decent turnout of Scottie faithful will be in the stands showing support.

The six Scotsmen going to State exceed last year's five for the rebuilding mat program, but the coach said he expected "a couple more guys in the finals."

"For the most part, those who placed (last weekend) had a good tournament," Casterline said. "Others didn't come to wrestle. I don't want to beat down those kids, but that's the way it is."

One Scottie, Seyfert, was held out and defaulted in his championship match for the same reason that he's been rested for weeks – to get him as strong as possible for State. He been fighting what could be a bacterial sickness since the holidays.

"We were playing it safe with him (at Divisional)," Casterline said. "At State Friday, he'll have to dig deep. He's a competitor. We're looking for good things from him, as well as with the rest of them."

Among those not placing at Divisional was heavyweight Joe Doney, who put together a solid senior year and was state-ranked in recent weeks.

"He got outwrestled," Casterline said. "He didn't have the tournament he wanted. The other guys in the weight class had a better tourney than him. That's how those heavyweight matches go."
