How'd They Do That? Scottie Girls Beat Class A Sidney

One Scottie varsity team won and one lost last Thursday when the Sidney Eagles rolled into town.

The girls won. The boys lost. And that's why they play the games.

The boys were 10-0 and top ranked in the state before their loss. They already had beaten Sidney 56-46 this season.

The girls were 4-6 before their win, playing without one of their best players, and lost to Sidney 73-47 in their first matchup.

For a quarter Thursday, it looked like more of the same was in store for the girls. They

trailed, 10-4, after one quarter to the strong Class A Lady Eagles before staging an unlikely comeback upset.

Coach Jon Kolstad's team, now 5-7 overall and tied for third in 2B at 3-3 after the Malta game, narrowed their deficit against Sidney to 16-13 at the half before pulling ahead. They led 22-21 after three quarters en route to a 36-33 victory.

With Scottie starter Amanda Wolff not in the lineup, her teammates dug deep.

Leading GHS were Abbi Kolstad, who scored 14 points and hit on six of her seven field goals in the second half. Leinie Hughes enjoyed an 11-point game, with three of her four buckets coming in the second half.

Also contributing for Glasgow were Jordan Kulczyk and Khole Krumwiede with 4 points each, Jaz Foster Shaw with 2 and Lexie Nixdorf with 1.

Hailey Steinbeiser topped SHS with 13 points.

The Scottie boys, meanwhile, weren't the team against Sidney that Scottie Nation has come to know this season. They lost their first game, 53-50, unable to recover from a third quarter in which the Eagles outscored them, 20-11.

"It was a bump in the road," coach Norm Braaten told The Courier. "I hope they get over it."

Braaten said he couldn't remember this G-Town unit playing so uninspired, or the crowd being so quiet at 1 Scottie Drive.

The Eagles (3-3, 6-5) aren't chopped liver, however. MaxPreps ranks them No. 9 in Class A.

Glasgow (6-0, 11-1), slipped to second in the Class B rankings after the defeat. Choteau (5-0, 12-0) is first.

Scoring for Glasgow were Jason Thibault with 16 points, Chase Fossum 11, Jake Kolstad 9, Keil Krumwiede 8 and Jake Page 6. Leading Sidney were Tyler Quilling with 13 points and Cade Strasheim with 10.

Braaten said his team didn't execute well inside vs. the Eagles, who are physical in the paint – but this problem was corrected the next night at Malta.

The Scotties took care of the rival Mustangs, 56-43, with 6-5 senior Fossum's 14 points leading the team.

"Chase finally played big inside, and the kids were finding him," Braaten said. "We got out of it what we wanted, a nice win, and we were pleased with it."

Also scoring for GHS were Krumwiede with 13 points, Kolstad 12, Thibault 8, Jake Page 7 and Zach Miller 2. Leading Malta were Allen Williamson with 23 points and Nate Castin 13.

Playing time is expected to be shared on Glasgow's entire varsity roster when young Saco/Whitewater visits tomorrow, but Friday will be far different with bigger, tougher Dawson County (4-3, 6-6) on the Scottie court. The Glendive team is ranked No. 8 in Class A.

GHS has five more game dates after this weekend before District begins Feb. 19 at Wolf Point.

"It's going to be interesting, I'll tell you," Braaten said.

Scottie Notes

Coach Braaten's mother, Arnetta, 82, passed away last Thursday. She is remembered as a lover of sports who so enjoyed following his basketball and baseball games in high school and college. Services for Mrs. Braaten will be held after the basketball season, per her request. You can read her full obituary on Page 6A.
