The Younger Generation Comes Through

Many of you have probably heard about Robert Back, a high school student at Belt, who sustained a head injury while playing in a high school football game.

Word spread quickly about his injury and condition. A fund was set up to help with his medical expenses.

The outpouring of support for the Back family has been tremendous. And no more so than at the Nashua School.

During the past several weeks, the students organized a drive to collect change – pennies, nickels, dimes, quarters -- to be sent to the Back family. And Saturday night, admission to the volleyball games was a donation to be added to the amount collected from the change drive.

The total amount received from these two events came to $1,169.

On Thursday of this week, the FCCLA at the Nashua School will be selling ice cream cones to students and staff for a donation of $1 or more which will also be sent to the medical fund for Robert Back.

When you hear that this all came about from a school with an enrollment in the neighborhood of 120 students – kindergarten through 12th grade – the enormity of the compassion and level of caring exhibited for this young man takes my breath away and makes me very proud of each and every one of them.

A desire to learn about other segments of our society was demonstrated by some Glasgow students when they recently spent a night sleeping in cardboard boxes to get a feel of what it's like for people who are homeless. Part of their project included accepting donations for a charity.

The students in these schools have grown up watching their parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, neighbors all stepping up to help others. And now they have taken what they've learned, claimed it as their own, and put it into action.

No better testimony can be given about a community than that of residents of all ages coming together to help someone.

To the students in these two schools who have put others before themselves I say, "Well done. Well done, indeed."
