Glasgow Invite: A Good Time To Cut time

The time isn't necessarily now, but it's getting there.

Glasgow XC hosts its annual midseason invitational this Saturday at Kiwanis Park in Fort Peck and everyone – the girls, the boys, Coach K – is looking for some serious improvement.

The Scotties consider the 3-mile course, nice and flat, as a land of opportunity and speed. With a month to go before State at Helena, cranking it up before the home crowd sounds like a plan.

"We hope to cut some time," coach Rod Karst told The Courier. "We know we need to cut our time for the competition. This weekend is a good time to do it."

The boys and girls team have another week of solid placements under their belts. The girls placed first at the Frazer and Culbertson invites, while the boys were first at Culbertson and second at Frazer.

Meanwhile, Josie Braaten ran solo in Missoula at the Mountain West Classic while her teammates held down the fort in Culbertson. Her mission was to test her ability to run in high altitudes, a question since her setback at State last year.

Braaten came through. She ran the course in 20 minutes flat, her best time this season. That was 1 second quicker than her first place time at Frazer last Thursday.

In her absence at Culbertson on Saturday, it was Amanda Wolff time. She led the Scottie girls in 21:33, placing second overall individually. She also ran 21:15 at hilly Frazer, fourth overall and second on GHS. She said her times "aren't bad, but I could do better."

"We placed well at both meets," she said. "We just have a lot of competition on our team to push each other, so that's always helpful."

Same goes for the Scottie boys. Gabe Hallock and Walker Allen continued with their habit of alternating top times on the team. Hallock clocked 18:13 at Frazer, sixth overall, and Allen 18:37 at Culbertson, fourth overall.

"It wasn't my best time (ever) at Frazer, but I went down (in time) at Culbertson," Hallock said. "It was pretty good."

At Fort Peck this weekend, Hallock said he's "looking forward to the all-flat course. I think it will help the whole team."

Schools at the Scottie invite will include Harlem – a team Hallock respects, the team that won at Culbertson.

Here's Saturday's lineup of teams, along with Karst's remarks about some: Brockton (tough boys team), Circle, Culbertson/Bainville (tough boys team), Custer County HS and maybe MS (coach Paul Yoakam has his team running really well), Dawson County HS and MS (Glendive is always tough), Dodson/Whitewater, Frazer, Harlem (front three boys among the top in state), Malta, Plentywood, Poplar, Richey/Lambert (the Fusion has a couple of tough girls and one tough boy), Sidney HS and MS, Terry, Watford City, Wolf Point HS and MS.

As of Tuesday, Havre MS, Williston and Williston-Trinity Christian had not told Karst whether they would compete.

Also expected Saturday are, to put it nicely, those little buggers.

"The mosquito situation isn't as bad as some places we have run at this fall, but I would suggest that you bring some spray for your kids," Karst said to parents.

The running begins at 10 a.m. with the junior high girls, followed by the junior high boys, varsity/JV girls and varsity JV/boys.

The Fort Peck Senior Citizens will be hosting a pancake and sausage fundraiser breakfast from 8:30 to 10:00 a.m. at the race site. The cost is $5. Money raised will go toward new tables at their recreation center.

Following are results from Frazer and Culbertson.
