Serving Proudly As The Voice Of Valley County Since 1913

Rebuilding Volleyball Team Putting In Foundation

This rebuilding season for Glasgow's volleyball Scotties continues with some positive payoff.

The varsity this past week split its first two 2014 home matches in a competitive manner – losing to Dawson County, beating Wolf Point. Rival Malta visits this Thursday.

GHS coach Lori Dailey described the home opener against Glendive last Thursday as "quite a showcase for all three Scottie teams." She said the JV team "played very well" in its win and the C squad picked up an "intense win," taking victory in overtime in the fifth game.

The varsity, meanwhile, lost in three increasingly tighter games – 15-25, 21-25 and 23-25 – to the Red Devils.

"The varsity squad didn't win, but all available players contributed nicely in a hard-fought match," Dailey told The Courier. "The level of play grew in intensity the entire time, and had the girls played as fiercely in the beginning as at the end the outcome may have been different. Still, their cohesive play and drive to work together and succeed, to play through tough situations is admirable. They are showing improvement daily."

Leading the Scotties were Sadie Sukut with nine kills, Sukut and Rachel Mickelson with one block each, Lauren Runningen with four aces and Teagan Fossum with five digs and eight assists. In all, Glasgow tallied 20 kills, three blocks, eight aces, 14 digs and 15 assists.

Leading the Red Devils were Marenah Crockett with 11 kills, Teia Knutson with six aces, Knutson with 17 assists, and Crockett, Savanna Keiser and Stephanie Carney with five digs each.

DCHS totaled 23 kills, three blocks, 14 aces, 20 digs and 17 assists.

Glasgow's first match victory of the season came against Wolf Point on Saturday, and it took five games to get it: 25-15, 25-21, 17-25, 13-25 and 15-13. Dailey said the "Scotties picked up right where they left off after the Glendive match, which is to say they played with high intensity while making few mistakes for the first two games against a determined and talented Wolf Point team."

Dailey credited a "raucous home crowd" for helping her Scotties persevere. After winning the first two games, she said a "lineup glitch" caused a 10-minute delay that factored in her team's setbacks the next two games.

"Both the Wolves and the Scotties definitely left it all on the floor Saturday night, treating the crowd to some exciting volleys and sheer determination on both sides of the net," she said.

Pacing GHS were Dana Hughes with 12 kills, Mickelson with three blocks, Hughes with five aces, Sukut with nine digs and Fossum with 23 assists. Glasgow totals: 32 kills, six blocks, 13 aces, 31 digs and 31 assists.

Wolf Point's leaders were Mariah Weeks with 36 kills and three blocks, Erin Presser with three aces, Ashtyn Hentges with 17 digs and Sierra Hanks with 19 assists. The visitors totaled 36 kills, seven blocks, eight aces, 66 digs and 34 assists

Dailey's looking for a packed house Thursday against Malta. The C squad plays at 4. The JV and varsity follow.
