Glasgow 12U Baseball Team Advances To Regionals

Baseball is proving to be a dominant sport this summer in Glasgow.

The Glasgow Cal Ripken 12U baseball team traveled to Havre over the weekend and won the Montana State Tournament and advanced to the Regionals Tournament that will be held in Kalispell, Montana starting on July 24.

The 12U team won all five of their games in the State Tournament that consisted of eight total teams. Two years ago, another 12U team from Glasgow advanced to the Regionals Tournament as they finished second that year.

12U head coach Mike Nieskens said that ten teams will be competing in the Regionals Tournament with teams spanning from Canada to Oregon.

In order to advance to the Regionals, Glasgow had to rely on the long-ball, crushing five home runs in the championship game against Glendive.

With the game 10-10 heading into the top of the seventh inning, Glasgow belted three of their five home runs in their final half inning to take secure a 19-11 victory over Glendive.

Glasgow's Dylan Nieskens hit a grand slam, Davyn Myrick connected on a three-run shot and Dexter Munson added a solo homer of his own in the decisive inning for the 12U team.

Nieskens and Chase Guttenberg added a grand slam each earlier in a game where Glasgow hit three slams total.

"Everyone of our kids can hit the ball," said coach Nieskens. "We can pick up the bat at anytime and go deep with it."

Nieskens said his team is not only talented at the plate, but in the field as well. He still thinks his team hasn't truly realized their full potential in the field and said that as they get more playing time together and keep playing as a team, the team can play with anyone.

As for the team advancing to the Regionals Tournament, Nieskens said that this is a moment in which the Glasgow sports community should be proud.

"It's a great lift for the kids," Nieskens said of his team. "They're a great group of kids and play hard every time they take the field."

Glasgow Youth Baseball will hold a fundraiser to support the team's trek to Kalispell. A car wash this Saturday will be held from 10 a.m. to noon at Lawrence Car Wash.
