Pranks On The Bride & Groom

June is the traditional month for weddings. Do you remember when weddings were followed up by friends and relatives with a chivaree (or shivaree)?

Since I had to look up the spelling of the word, I did learn that it means “mock serenade.” I just remember it as a fun time for the instigators, but not necessarily fun for the recipients.

Remember the noise of banging on pots and pans, ringing of cowbells and all of the whooping and hollering that went with it? I am sure that some of you remember the pranks that were played on the bride and groom also.

I am pretty sure law enforcement would be called today if some of those early day chivarees were to be re-enacted today, but it sure created some memories not to be forgotten.

Gwen welcomes your memories at 367-5582.
