Glasgow Boys Avenge Loss To Malta, Claim Northern B Title
The feeling all year among fans of Glasgow boys basketball was that there was something special here with this group. On Saturday night, the team proved that theory right in front of a raucous home crowd as Glasgow avenged a loss to Malta a week earlier in the District 2B championships by winning the Northern B Divisional championship 62-59.
When the final buzzer sounded and sent the packed house into a frenzy, no one appeared to be as happy as Scotties head coach Norm Braaten.
"We were determined, but we couldn't worry about Malta before we got through Choteau and Rocky Boy," Braaten said as he struggled to hold back tears. "I'm happy for them, they're such great kids."
Watching Glasgow have to play three games on their quest for the Northern B championship, you could tell that the Scotties weren't going to let their coach down.
Junior guard Jason Thibault, normally a pass-first point guard who sets up other players with scoring opportunities almost at will, decided that it was time to remind teams that he was just as capable shooting the ball as he was dishing it out.
In the semifinal game and championship games combined, Thibault dropped 44 points, in close battles with Rocky Boy and Malta in which Glasgow needed every point they could get.
Senior guard Lane Herbert said the loss against Malta a week earlier stung a little, but that the team couldn't reflect on it too much as they had an opportunity for revenge.
"We just had to come out and play our game," said Herbert. "We knew since we had home court advantage that we were going to take it to them."
Herbert was adamant that the team had this type of season in mind from the first day of practice and pointed out that they're not quite done yet.
"Winning the Northern B Divisional was on our minds from the start," Herbert said. "We wanted nothing less than that and hopefully we can bring another title home in the next two weeks."
Glasgow will get another week of practice in before they prepare for the State B tournament in Bozeman from March 13-15.
