Serving Proudly As The Voice Of Valley County Since 1913

Duane Sibley

Duane Sibley, 72, left his loved ones and quietly passed from this earthly world from his home in Wyota on Saturday evening, Feb. 15, 2014, of natural causes.

He was born to Fred "Bud" and Ruby (Turner) Sibley on Sept. 13, 1941. He was the oldest of his four other brothers and two sisters. His mother and father lived in Neihart, Mont., at the time, and he was born in Great Falls. At the age of four he came to Wiota to begin his life as a cowboy and a farmer. With the large farm family, the experiences and adventures were many. He enjoyed being called upon to rope calves at the many neighborhood brandings. His horse, Egypt, was special to him.

He attended school in Nashua and Frazer, graduating from Frazer High School in 1960. He then did his four years in the United States Marine Corp before coming back to the home place.

He met the love of his life, Linda Coon, who became his beloved wife on April 20, 1974. He and Linda built their cottonwood log home and began farming and raising hay. Their one son, Cole, was born June 28, 1975.

He gave his time to the Nashua School Board, the Fort Peck Water Users Board and various other community organizations. He was instrumental in the building and fruition of the Fort Peck Dam Interpretive Center and Museum. Fossil hunting from the Hell Creek formation of Montana to as far away as China was explored.

He was also an inventor of sorts, with the development of an auger-type baler and also a hay hauling and stacking machine. If the need was there, he said, "Why not build it?"

He enjoyed his retirement from the farm with Linda, watching their son build his own log house and raise two precious granddaughters as the next generation on the Sibley farm.

He was preceded in death by his father, Bud; his mother, Ruby; one brother, Norman; and of course his grandparents and many uncles and aunts.

Survivors include his loving wife, Linda; his cherished son, Cole, and his wife, Traci, of Wiota; two beautiful granddaughters, Ryleigh Delich and Gracyn Sibley; three brothers, Dwight Sibley and his wife, Carol, and their children, Craig, Kirk and Karmen; Dewey Sibley and his wife, Julie, and their children, Joe, Wes and Jordan; and Earl Sibley and his wife, Kathy, and Nikki and Shawn; two sisters, Sharon Lloyd and her husband, Larry, of Nashua, and their children, Duane, Kelley and Larry; and Linda Shumway and her husband, Dan, and their children, Sanders and Sloane; a sister-in-law, Wanda Sibley of Glasgow, and her son Norman Lee; and two nieces, Norina and Doral; also numerous other great nieces and nephews and many cousins.

Services were held on Wednesday, Feb. 19, at 11 a.m. at Our Redeemer Lutheran Church in Nashua with Pastor John Bent of Whitefish officiating. Burial was on the family farm that Duane so dearly loved.
