Irene Pearl Martin

Irene Pearl Martin, 81, of Brockton, Mont., died peacefully, surrounded by her family, on Tuesday, Oct. 29, 2013, in Billings, Mont.

She was born in Fort Yates, N.D., on Oct. 14, 1932, to Julia Ireland Fast Horse and Jake Martin and lived a majority of her life in Brockton. She also lived on the Fort Berthold Indian Reservation while she was married to Adelbert Lone Bear, Sr.

She worked at numerous jobs throughout her life but her most memorable places of employment were Brockton School and the B&S Quick Stop.

She enjoyed traveling and going to rummage sales and thrift stores. They were her favorite pastimes. She enjoyed family get-togethers and powwows. Family was important to her as she raised her children and numerous grandchildren.

She married and later divorced Adelbert Lone Bear, Sr. From this union nine children were born. She is survived by five children, Karen "Kitty" Cain and her husband, Craig, Adelbert "Ears" Lone Bear Jr., Marty Lone Bear, Gerald "Pinky" Lone Bear, and Daryl "Henry" Lone Bear and his wife, Noreen.

She married and later divorced Nelson "Bud" Philbrick. They remained together up until her passing. During their union, they adopted Patricia "Trish" Philbrick.

Irene is survived by one brother, David "Victor" Fast Horse and his wife, Maggie; one sister, Gloria Diserly and her husband, Arlie; two adopted brothers, Dawson Firemoon and Leland Spotted Bird; and one adopted daughter, Judy Johnson; She is also survived by Victoria Joshua, Angeline Iron Road, Etta Starr, Lonnie Wise Spirit and Delphine Plenty Chief and her husband, Irving, from Standing Rock Reservation.

She was preceded in death by three daughters, Joan Fast Horse, Roberta "Scobey" Lone Bear and Delphine "Snug" Lone Bear; one son, Max Lone Bear; one sister, Cecelia Martin; two brothers, Thomas and Jasper Martin; and four grandchildren, Bernadine Fast Horse, Cricket Lone Bear, Jeremy Lone Bear and Marlin Lone Bear.

More survivors include grandchildren, Denise Fast Horse, Jamie Lone Bear-Granbois, Coleen and Marshal Cain, Gary, Janet, Nichole, Raine, Ian, Luke, and Callen Lone Bear, Irene, Marty Jr., and Michele Lone Bear, Mandy Manning; Cristy, Jana, and Alex Lone Bear, Breanne Lone Bear, Matthew James, Dillon, Daneen, Daniel and Sunni Eagle, Lacey Lone Bear, Nichole and Nathan Lone Bear, Angela, Kimmie and Sam Bird, Reede Lone Bear, JaSara and Iva Todd, along with numerous other nieces, nephews, great-grandchildren and family relatives from Fort Berthold, Standing Rock, Fort Peck and Fort Belknap reservations.

Our apologies to anyone we may have forgotten to mention, as she had numerous family, friends and relatives.

She was a beloved mother; grandmother, and sister and will be greatly missed but not forgotten. She will forever remain in our hearts.

A vigil service was held at 7 p.m. Friday, Nov. 1, and Mass of Christian Burial was held Saturday, Nov. 2, at 10 a.m., all services held at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in Poplar. Interment was in the Riverside Cemetery in Poplar.

Bell Mortuary in Glasgow was in charge of arrangements.
