Wildfire Heads To Brockton Undefeated In Conference After Lustre Triangle

The Hinsdale/Saco Wildfire traveled to Lustre last Saturday for a triangle volleyball match, first against Lustre Christian and lastly against Culbertson.

Wildfire head coach Kathy Siroky had her girls tuned up and in fine form this morning as they faced off against the Lustre Lady Lions in the Lustre gymnasium.

The Wildfire stormed through the first game 25 to 7 with most of the starters playing the entire game. Libero Payton Anna Chopper came in to serve and handed the Lions a couple of aces in this first game as Lustre mostly went one and out. Courtney Capdeville hit on 6 straight serves to close out the first game.

The second game saw Delaney Beil replacing Hannah Whitaker and Payton coming in for Bethany Lacock. Whitney Molina got her sizzling serve to work for her today and served up 7 straight in the match. Alana Ostrom got some playing time and let me tell you folks, this kid can jump, for a freshman. She'll be a good one in the future. Final score game two was 25 to 12

Coach Siroky, assisted by April Wills, started most of the JV for the third game and they dug themselves a pretty deep hole before someone put a finger in the dike. With the Lady Lions putting on a show of their own the Wildfire fell in arrears 15 to 8 before Coach put back some of her starters. It wasn't that the JV played so badly either. It was that Lustre was just getting the breaks and playing harder than Hinsdale/Saco. But the Wildfire prevailed and the final score for game three was H/S 25 and Lustre 21.

Payton Anna had a dying quail ace, Jade Jones made a nice shot over for a pernt, Alana got more playing time and coming in off the bench after resting most of the third game, Shyla Gairrett made a couple fantastic digs and a one arm save to end the match with 4 assists and 4 digs.

Chadaya Christensen is improving every game. She jumps well and is getting her kill shot down to a science with a lot of power behind the stroke. She contributed 5 kills, 5 digs and a couple aces in this first contest. (I awarded my Star of the Game to Chadaya). Whitney Molina added 4 kills, three digs, 6 aces and 4 PNKs.(One was the slickest Doink you ever saw.)

Bethany Lacock added 4 kills a dig and a couple PNKs. Capdeville had a kill and a dig along with a couple Points Not Kills. Gairrett had 5 assists, 2 digs, 1 ace and 3 PNK's. Whitaker tallied 5 assists, 1 dig, 3 aces (as usual), 1 PNK and 1 great save.

DeVon Palmer got a kill and a dig in limited playing time. Beil contributed 2 assists and a couple points.

Hindale/Saco–Culbertson

The match against the Culbertson Cowgirls followed the Lustre match giving the Wildfire a 30-minute rest.

Before I get to that, however, I would like to welcome Josi Ellger to the Wildfire roster. Josi is an exchange student from Germany staying with the Steve and LaMae Lacock family. It's nice to have you on the team Josi.

The Cowgirls lost a few starters from last years tough squad and only have two seniors this year. They are still tough but were without senior hitter Erica Nickolof for this match. Her absence was felt on the court but she'll be back next week in full force I'm told.

With the score tied 16 all in the first game Courtney Capdeville came to bat for the Wildfire and fired nine straight serves including 3 aces to end Culbertson hopes of a first game win. Wildfire 25, Culbertson 16.

Seems Courtney likes to play up at the net getting blocks because she contributed a team high 4 blocks in this match. Plus, she's a definite intimidation factor when the other team tries to make a kill.

Molina got a sliding-on-the-floor-one-armed dig that went over the net to the Culbertson side. A Cowgirl smacked it back to the H/S side where an awaiting Capdeville jumped high, blocked the shot and put it to the open spot on the court for a KWA. You could see the wheels turning as her eyes searched the floor and found the place where there wasn't any defender and smashed the ball to the very spot. Good on ya' Courtney.

Early in the game with the score knotted at 6 Payton rattled off 10 straight serves to give the Wildfire a commanding lead they would not relinquish. Game over: H/S 25 Culbertson 14.

The Wildfire, as they are sometimes prone to do, gave their loyal fans a scare in the third game when the Cowgirls got out to an early lead and were quite loath to give it up until with the score tied at 20 each apiece the Cowgirls forced a couple unforced error

onto the Wildfire and took the lead 23 to 20.

That's when the girls from Hinsdale/Saco hunkered down and got serious about taking back this game.

The score stood at Culbertson 23 and the Wildfire 21 when Chadaya Christensen came to the plate and hit 4 serves resulting in the four pernts they needed to win the game 25 to 23 and the match 3-0.

I got so excitemented that I forgot to keep accurate stats. What I have is this: Bethany led the team with 7 kills. (My pick for Star of the Game). She really came alive in this match and was all over the place making blocks, put-backs and kills. Courtney had 4 blocks and 3 aces among other accomplishments.

Whitney added 4 kills, 4 digs and a couple PNK's. Shyla dug up 4, assisted 3 times and had one very nice save in the final point of the match. Hannah had 2 aces, Payton had an ace and Delaney Beil led the team in assists with 5.

The Wildfire remain unbeaten in conference play, being 4-0.

We travel to Brockton this weekend , Saturday the 28th, for a triangle meet with Brockton and Scobey. See ya' there?
