Serving Proudly As The Voice Of Valley County Since 1913

Eunice Moen

Former Glasgow resident Eunice (Burrus) Moen, 97, died Friday, Sept. 20, 2013, at the Health Center in Kalispell, Mont.

A memorial service will be held at Bell Mortuary in Glasgow at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 28, with burial to follow at the Highland Cemetery. A reception will be held at a location to be announced.

She was born on a homestead west of Glasgow to Alfred “Mike” and Merle Burrus on June 23, 1916, the second of seven children. From the homestead the family moved to a farm near Liberty Crossing where she spent her early years.

Her first two years of school were in a tar-papered shack belonging to Christ Lund. After her parents’ successful campaign to be included in District 1, she rode a horse-drawn bus to Glasgow, where she experienced the miracles of running water and flush toilets for the first time.

She graduated from Glasgow High School in 1933 at the age of 16 and attended college in Havre for a year before marrying a neighbor, Chet Moen, on Oct. 23, 1935. He worked at Fort Peck Dam until 1942, when the family (which by then included two little girls) moved to Tacoma, Wash., where he worked in the shipyards until the end of World War II.

After returning to Glasgow in 1945, she worked in the hot lunch program at the high school. From there she took a job in the clerk’s office, which she held for 15 years, and in 1973 became the Clerk of School District 1. She retired in 1981.

She was a member of the First United Methodist Church and the Degree of Honor. She was an excellent seamstress, sewing her own clothes and those of her daughters. Every summer she maintained a large garden and kept busy canning and freezing produce. She also enjoyed reading and playing cards. She was able to stay in her own home until age 94, when she moved into Prairie Ridge in Glasgow and then to Buffalo Hills in Kalispell in 2011 to be near her daughter.

She and Chet enjoyed traveling and made three trips to Hawaii, as well as several in the continental United States. Most of all, she enjoyed her family. The Moen house in Glasgow was a gathering place for all the relatives, and the grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews loved visiting there.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 64 years, Chet; one daughter, Lila (Bob) Sanders; two brothers, Art and Max; and two sisters, Madge (Ernie) Martin and Gettie (Mark) Gilleland.

Survivors include two sisters, Mary Hassler of Dallas, Texas, and Norma Maney and her husband, Wendell, of Bloomington, Ill .; one daughter, Phyllis Sanguine and her husband, Bill, of Kalispell; six grandchildren, Beth, Bill, and Brian Sanguine and his wife, Toni, and Shannon Holdsambeck and her husband, Rex, Shelly Freese and her husband, Bart, and Robert Sanders; six great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. She was deeply loved and will be missed by all.

If friends and family wish, memorial donations can be made to the Glasgow High School Educational Trust Fund c/o Jeanine Markle, 904 Wedum Drive, Glasgow, MT 59230; or the Pioneer Museum, P.O. Box 975, Glasgow, MT 59230.
