Red, Red Ready To Go

Garrett Godwin & Friends Brighten Up Glasgow Fire Hydrants

Garrett Godwin’s Eagle Scout project has brightened up the south side of Glasgow. He recruited volunteers to spread out Saturday and repaint fire hydrants.

He heard at a City Council meeting that some faded hydrants were difficult for the Glasgow Fire Department to find, so it seemed like a worthy public service project to make them shine again.

Godwin got a good response when he approached Glasgow Director of Public Works Bob Kompel with the idea. Kompel had the city donate the special paint – in a color labeled “fire hydrant red” – and brushes.

Godwin rounded up the manpower, friends, neighbors, relatives, people at church and their children. He copied city maps and planned routes for various teams to follow. On Saturday he sent out the teams and drove around to supervise them, giving painting tips on the way.

Godwin has to document the project, submit the paper work and complete a couple of merit badges to finish the requirements for Eagle Scout, the highest rank in Scouting. He said he hopes to have it finished by New Year’s. He is a member of Troop 850, where his father, Chuck Godwin, is troop master.
