The New Name Is Hinsdale/Saco Wildfire

Team Formerly Known As Saco/Hinsdale Panthers Preparing To Hit The Volleyball Court

Mostly the same faces but a new name and colors have been added to the list of teams for the upcoming District 1C volleyball season. The team formerly known as the Saco/Hinsdale Panthers has now become, by virtue of a team vote, the Hinsdale/Saco Wildfire.

In this writer’s opinion, this is a good move for all concerned. Much like the MonDak Thunder: two towns merging to form one team as did Westby/Grenora. Others include Froid/Medicine Lake Red Hawks, Scobey/Opheim (stayed same as the Spartans) and Richey/Lambert Fusion. I fear that the next 50 years in Northeastern Montana will bring about many more mergers. Will it someday be Glasgow/Wolf Point or Malta/Harlem?

But I digress.

Second year Head Coach Kathy Siroky will remain at the helm with April Wills assisting and taking charge of the JV.

After a very disappointing finish to last year, Siroky told me, “The girls are not going to let that happen again.”

You’ll recall that the Panthers barely squeezed by, making it to Divisionals in fourth place but missed their chance at state by losing to Wibaux in three and then Ekalaka in three.

It’s still to early to know who will start, but seniors Chadaya Christensen, Whitney Molina and Bethany Lacock will most likely retain their starting positions from last year. Monday, Aug. 19, was the first day of practice.

Hannah Whitaker played quite a bit last season, as did Courtney Capdeville and Delaney Beil, so there will still be a lot of experience on the court for the Wildfire.

Rounding out the 13- player Wildfire roster will be Devon Palmer, Jade Jones, Payton Chopper, Kaci Kuki, Alana Ostrum, Charlotte Jolley and Madison Taylor.

As I’ve mentioned before folks, volleyball is a very exciting sport. It’s fast paced with ever constant action, unbelievable moves and awesome athleticism.

The Wildfire’s first match will be against the Scobey/Opheim Spartans on Aug. 30 at Saco. On the 31st, plan on seeing them at the Malta Invitational. Be there or be square.

That’s it for now folks. Thanks for listening
