Reds Hoping To Mine Some Gold

Resilient Glasgow Heads To State As No. 2 Eastern Team, Opens Vs. Lethbridge Miners

The Glasgow Reds, 48-9 on the season after surviving the Eastern A District Tournament the hard way, and the Miners open the Montana-Alberta American Legion Baseball Conference championship tournament 12:30 p.m. Thursday at Helena’s Kindrick Legion Field.

The Reds put in their last Glasgow practice Tuesday before packing and hitting the road today. The state tournament (a link to the full schedule is on the Reds Facebook page) continues through Monday. All eight teams play Thursday openers:

• Game 1 – Laurel vs. Vauxhall, 9 a.m.

• Games 2 – Glasgow vs. Lethbridge, 12:30 p.m.

• Game 3 – Belgrade vs. Missoula, 4

• Game 4 – Libby vs. Helena, 7:30.

The Reds go to state as Eastern A’s second seed after losing, 9-6, to the Laurel Dodgers in the district title game Sunday. The regular season champion Reds clawed their way through the losers bracket to return to the big dance this year, going 4-2 at Pirtz Field in Billings.

Glasgow results and highlights at district:

Reds 14, Sidney 1

Wacy Ortman went 2-for-4 with four RBI and winning pitcher Walt Dalbey lasted seven innings and struck out five.

Billings Blue Jays 3, Reds

Keil Krumwiede went 2-for-3 and starter John Koessl struck out three, yielding one earned run over eight innings.

Reds 12, Miles City 1

Winning pitcher Andy Gardner whiffed 11 over seven innings. Ortman led the high-octane offense, going 2-for-4 with four RBI.

Reds 9, Billings Cardinals 6

The Reds won after several lead changes. Gardner went 3-for-5 with two RBI. Grant Legare picked up the victory, striking out four and giving up four runs in six innings.

Glasgow 2, Billings Blue Jays 0

Jason Thibault went the distance in gaining the shutout win, striking out seven. Krumeide went 3-for-5 with an RBI.

Laurel 9, Glasgow 4

Grant Legare went 2-for-5. Cutter Kolstad took the loss, striking out two and giving up three earned runs over eight frames.
