City Council OKs Animal Shelter Deal

Glasgow has a new contract for an animal shelter to care for dogs and cats impounded by the police department. At the regular City Council meeting on Monday, they voted to approve an 11-month contract with Matt and Lisa Baxter, who own Valley Visions Paints on Skylark Road. The arrangement pays $625 a month, plus $20 per cat or dog impounded (not to exceed $120 per month).

Contract negotiations are going on with the Glasgow Police Department. According to City Clerk Stacey Amundson, the Council accepted the counter offer made by the police and will continue the process at the next Council meeting on Aug. 5.

The city is moving forward with an increase in water rates. There will be a public hearing and a new ordinance to impose a $5 raise, probably this fall, and another $5 six months later.

The Council also decided to start cost negotiations with Dry Prairie Rural Water to begin selling water to them. Public hearings will be scheduled.

After reviewing letters of application and conducting interviews, a committee of Council members recommended hiring Pete Helland as city attorney, effective Aug. 1. The contract will be put to a vote at the Aug. 5 meeting. Helland will only handle civil matters until Jan. 1. Dave Gorton is retiring at the end of the year, but has a revised contract to deal with the city’s criminal cases until Jan. 1.
