Norma N. Askvig

Norma N. (Nelson) Askvig, 86, of Rapid City, S.D., died Sunday, June 30, 2013, at Rapid City Regional Hospital after battling cancer for the past six years.

She was born June 16, 1927, to Willie and Hazel (Kelley) Nelson on the family homestead near Hinsdale. She was the fourth of six children.

On Nov. 7, 1946, she married Ole Askvig in Glasgow, where they resided until 1968 when they relocated to Rapid City.

She was always there for family, making sure that there was always plenty of love, food and fun for everyone. She both gave and received her greatest joys from her family.

The majority of her working career was spent as a grocery clerk. She was a member of Atonement Lutheran Church, active in the Rapid City AA program and Alano society.

Survivors include children, Betty Potter and her husband, Mel, of Newark, Del., Rick Askvig and his wife, Denise, of Rapid City, Sue Smalley and her husband, Don, of Sturgis, S.D., and Lori Canfield and her husband, Wayne, of Rapid City; grandchildren, Kevin Kopf, Scott and Melanie Potter, Jim Cranford and his wife, Samantha, Robert Cranford, Richard Cranford, Martin Cranford and his wife, Angie, Michelle Carpenter and her husband, Mike, Jess Reid and her husband, Kevin, Stacey James and her husband, Tre, Dan Smalley and his wife, Heather, Kayla Johnson, Rodney, Josh, and Paul Weller and his wife, Becky; and a whole boatload of great-grandchildren (30 at last count); one sister, Marion Palmer and her husband, Terry; sisters-in-law, Barb Nelson, Dorothy Byrd, Pat Theisen and her husband, Don, and Fran Lee; brothers-in-law, Lloyd and his wife, Ora, Dick and his wife, Darlene, and Al Askvig and his wife, Lois; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Ole, in 1999; their daughter, Sharon, in 1998; brothers, Harold, Eldon and Donald Nelson; one sister, Edrie McColly; and brother and sister-in-laws from both sides of the family.

Funeral services were held Monday, July 8, at 11 a.m. at Atonement Lutheran Church in Rapid City, S.D., with Rev. Jon Mapa officiating. Burial was at 2:30 p.m. at Black Hills National Cemetery. Visitation was on Monday from 9:30 a.m. until time of services at the church.

Memorials have been established to the American Cancer Society and to the Alano Society.
