Mona Lee (Buckles) Black Dog

1957-2013

On Friday, May 24, 2013, God sent his angels to get our beloved wife, mom and grandma, Mona Lee (Buckles) Black Dog, age 56. She died of heart failure at the Northeast Montana Health Services in Poplar, Mont.

A vigil service will be held Thursday, May 30, at 7 p.m. and funeral services will be held Friday, May 31, at 10 a.m., all at the James Black Dog Hall in Fort Kipp. Interment will be in the Black Dog Family Cemetery in Fort Kipp.

She was born Feb. 20, 1957, to Marjorie “Tootie” Buckles and Dave “Shunks” Buckles. She grew up and lived most of her life in Poplar and Fort Kipp, attending schools in Poplar.

She worked numerous jobs, but working at the Adult Corrections being her favorite and most memorable. She gained a lot of friends working there. She retired from Adult Corrections after having to do chemo treatments in 2010.

She met and married the love of her life, Maynard Black Dog. They were married on May 20, 1978. Together they made a home with their three sons, Bill, Jim and Ceejay, and their only daughter, Ann.

She enjoyed playing bingo, cooking and baking with her granddaughter, Tiny, watching ghost stories and documentaries with her grandsons, Howard and Billy, and being outdoors with her little grandsons, Ronnie, Christopher, Tommy and Jayson. She was at her happiest when she was with her children and grandchildren. Wherever Gramma was she was never alone, she always had one of her grandbabies with her.

Proceeding her in death are her parents, Tootie and Shunks Buckles; grandparents Hazel and Dave Buckles, Bonnie and Charles Renz; a sister, Chickie Weinberger; four brothers Lynnie Smith, Timmy Smith, Buddy Grainger and Sandy Grainger; a nephew, Ryan Wade Buckles; a niece, Amber Lynn Buckles; two grandsons, Adam Black Dog and Christopher Black Dog; and a granddaughter, Payton Jade Weinberger.

Survivors include her husband, Maynard; one daughter and best friend, Ann Browning and her husband, Delwayne; three sons, who were her pride and joy; Bill Black Dog and his wife, Vernice, Jim Black Dog, and Ceejay Black Dog and his wife, Marissa; three sisters, Marquieta Colgan and her husband, Tom, Margie Buckles, and Marilee Buckles; a sister-in-law, Trivian Grainger; two brothers, Ronnie Grainger and Morris Buckles and his wife, Sheila; a brother-in-law, Lawrence Black Dog and his wife, Martha; four aunts, Ramon Kirn, Davetta Merchant and her husband, Roger, Patsy Walters and her husband, Doug, and Alice Schmits and her husband, Maurie, of California; seven grandsons, Malachi Chopper, Howard Vernon, Billy Cyrus, Ronnie Mikel James, Thomas Patrick Lee, Jayson David Charles and Christopher Everett; and her only granddaughter, whom she called her tiny princess, Liessa Marie Browning; a nephew who she thought of as a son, Rusty Boxer; and a niece, who she helped raise, Marissa Buckles.

Bell Mortuary of Glasgow is in charge of arrangements.
