A Walk On The Wild Side

The Montana Wilderness Society is in its 51st year of offering wilderness walks to places of special scenic interest across the state. Two of these walks are in the Glasgow area. The walks, guided by experienced outdoor people, are free, but the group number is limited and registration is required.

From Saturday through Monday, June 8 to 10, the walk will be Prairie Tour - BLM Wildlands and Canadian Grasslands National Park. The tour is of moderate difficulty. Signup deadline is May 31. Contact Neil Philip, 406-535-6586, [email protected],

From Hinsdale, the group will travel to Rock Creek and car camp on Saturday night. The following day, if time allows, the group will travel to Frenchman Breaks and hike across the ridge looking into the basin of Frenchman Creek. From Frenchman Breaks, the group will travel to Val Marie, Saskatchewan, the entrance to the Canadian Grasslands National Park. This grasslands is home to black-tailed prairie dogs and the black-footed ferret, often considered North America’s most endangered mammal.

A BLM Wildland tour of moderate difficulty will take place later in June, Saturday and Sunday, June 22 and 23. One of the leaders will be Andrew McKean, the Glasgow resident who is the editor of Outdoor Life magazine.

The first day will be in antelope and sage hen areas north of the C.M. Russell National Wildlife Refuge. The group will car camp at Timber Creek. The next day will be in the Burnt Lodge Wilderness Study area bordering the CMR, spectacular river breaks topography with scattered stands of ponderosa, lodgepole, junipers and douglas fir.
