  • Resounding Thumbs Down

    Chris McDaniel, The Courier|May 12, 2021

Ranchers, farmers, irrigators and Native Americans have given a resounding thumbs down to a planned increase, then reduction, in water flow next year from Fort Peck Dam. The augmented flows are meant to stimulate the natural spawning cycle of the Pallid Sturgeon, one of three endangered species found in the Missouri River between Fort Peck Dam and Lake Sacajawea. The other two are the Least Tern and the Piping Plover. Area farmers are worried about how the augmented flows may result in expensive repairs or retrofits to irrigation systems,...

  • Finding Equilibrium

It’s that time of year when ice anglers will be heading out to Montana's waters for the ice fishing season. Ice fishing is a great winter activity that the entire family can enjoy. Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks reminds anglers that safety should be the number one concern during a day out on the ice. • APR's Request to BLM

    Ron Garwood, Nashua|Apr 18, 2018

Dear Editor, My name is Ron Garwood, I am a 17 year supervisor of the Valley County Conservation District from Nashua. I am also a member of the FWP’s CAC from region 6. I have been hunting since 1957 on private CMR (Fort Peck Game Range) state lands and BLM lands. I believe the APR’s request to the BLM to allow the APR to be able to take out cross fences on BLM and state lands and to be able to run up to 1,600 bison on the Timber Creek grazing unit in Valley County in one large pasture is ridiculous. This action would be detrimental to hunting...

  • FWP Offering Incentives

    Marc Kloker - FWP, For the Courier|Apr 11, 2018

The cold, snowy, and lingering winter we’ve had across the state has many citizens concerned about game birds such as pheasants, grouse, and partridge. Although these species are well adapted to make it through even tough winters, there is something landowners can do to help birds next winter- plant a food plot. Montana FWP has two options to help landowners establish food plots for game birds: standing grain plots and new diverse seed mixes. Standing grain plots: For standing grain plots, FWP will pay landowners $150 per acre to help offset t... Full story
