Sunday night went out with a bang for the Valley County Sheriff’s Office. What started as a vehicle doing donuts in a yard turned into a 45-minute high speed chase. Nicholas Davis and Austine Beil, both of Hinsdale, were both arrested on multiple charges. The call came into dispatch around 9:49 p.m. The caller, Tom Sunford of Saco, said a white extended cab Ford Ranger pulled into his yard. One of the hottest topics at the Glasgow City Council meeting had council members and the mayor trying to figure out how to handle higher waters. With flood being a common problem in the Glasgow area, the city council tried to discuss taking action at the meeting on Monday, Nov. 18. A letter of intent that was signed in July 2012 gave the city two years to complete a list of items to keep the levee in conditions that met the Army Corp of Engineers standards. Judges are not the most visible in the community, but their work does make an impact in the community. City Judge Dave Riggin is retiring at the end of this year, and at the last Glasgow City Council meeting the decision was made to fill his position with current City Court Clerk Lynn Gilbert. Gilbert will take the new position on Jan. 1, 2014. She said that this is a unique opportunity that she looks forward to. The outcome of the November election left some tension and a vacancy open at the Glasgow City Council meeting that took place on Monday, Nov. 18. The city council had to seek a new position left vacant by Becky Erickson, who will take the mayor’s seat in January. Nanci Schoenfelder brought her application in to fill the seat at the meeting. I began teaching the GED classes in Glasgow in fall 2013. It was rewarding and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I would get such a feeling of accomplishment when a student got their GED. Most of my students were able to get better jobs and some went on to college or some sort of technical training. What an accomplishment on their part. Oscar couldn't bear another birthday without his beautiful bride, Alma. Alma Isabelle (Newell) Robertson, 90, went to join her husband on Monday, Nov. 18, 2013. No services are planned at this time. A Celebration of Life will be held next summer at the Robertson Ranch. She was born on June 10, 1923, in the Bitterroot, to John and Nellie Newell. William J. "Bill" Court was born on July 5, 1927, to parents Nick and Olga Court, on the family farm south of Hinsdale, Mont. He died from cancer on, Nov. 21, 2013, in Billings, at the age of 86. Cremation has taken place. A Memorial Mass will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 3, at St. Thomas the Apostle Church. Inurnment of ashes will be at a later date in the Hinsdale Hillview Cemetery. Sister Christopher (Mary) Weber, 84, died Thursday, Nov. 21, 2013, at Talahi Senior Campus in St. Cloud, Minn. She was born and raised in Nashua and Glasgow. She attended South Side Grammar Public Grade School and Glasgow Public High School. In 1948, she entered Saint Benedict's Monastery in St. Joseph, Minn., making perpetual monastic profession as a Benedictine sister July 11, 1953. Scottie student athletes are earning plenty of success on an off the field and court these days. Thirty-four Glasgow High School student athletes, including cheerleaders, are Academic All-State Qualifiers with the Montana Coaches Association. It's more good news for a school and athletic program that won championships this fall in cross country, football and volleyball. On Saturday the Ice Dawg high school team traveled to Havre for a pair of games against the Ice Hawks. As is normal in Havre, the games were hard-fought, physical affairs that saw a parade of players from both benches make their way to the penalty box. Unfortunately, Glasgow ended up on the wrong side of the score, being defeated 5-1 in the first game. On Saturday, Nov. 23, the Glasgow High School Speech and Drama team competed in the Roundup B & C Invitational against 13 other teams. It is not often that Glasgow is able to compete against southern teams such as Sweetgrass, Columbus and White Sulfur Springs. Hunter numbers and reported harvests at the Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks Region 6 game check station outside Havre are still down when compared to past years. “Hunter numbers so far this year have only been about 2 percent lower than last year’s numbers, but they’re still down 38 percent from 2010 levels,” said Havre-area Wildlife Biologist Scott Hemmer. “Antelope and white-tailed deer are the two species that have seen the largest decreases in harvest.” Region 6 antelope and deer numbers were heavily impacted by several recent hard winters....
