  • Coming Up Roses

    Bonnie Davidson, The Courier|Apr 16, 2014

Flowers almost always bring a smile. We share flowers at times of celebration, times of sympathy and sometime just to show we care. Now the business that has been in Glasgow since 2005, providing flowers and gifts for the community, has been honored as the best. Glasgow Flower & Gifts owner Peggy Aakre was pretty excited to receive recognition Thursday from Great Northern Development Corporation (GNDC) as Business of the Year for 2013. Her business got a beautiful glass plaque and was...

  • Waste Not? Or Want Not?

    Bonnie Davidson, The Courier|Apr 16, 2014

It's a big number, maybe a tough one to swallow. The number is an estimated $7,566,100. That is what Morrison-Mairle Inc. proposed for all the improvements at the water treatment plant (WTP) in Glasgow. A few members of the community attended the public hearing that took place at the city council meeting on Monday, April 7. Jeremy Perlinski and Jeff Ashley gave an overview to city council members and those in attendance at the meeting of what was discussed at the first preliminary engineering...

  • Big Issue: Should NorthWestern Energy Buy Dams?

    Bonnie Davidson, The Courier|Apr 16, 2014

Last week the audience was very small at a public service commission meeting held in Glasgow. Representatives from NorthWestern Energy, the Public Service Commission (PSC) and legal counsel showed up to talk with the audience about some current proposals. NorthWestern has been looking at purchasing 11 hydroelectric units to bring more stability to its power grid. The purchase comes with a $900 million pricetag, which would affect the rates for current users. The PSC helps to regulate rates and watches out for consumers. The proposed rates...

  • Glasgow's Physicist: Cami Starr Collins

    Bonnie Davidson, The Courier|Apr 16, 2014

Some of the credit could go to the hard work and dedication of one Glasgowite. Those who remember her years in the local schools seem to remember a student who was extremely gifted and talented, and perhaps a student who had a passion for learning. Cami Starr Collins recently finished her Ph.D. in plasma physics. She obtained that degree from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in December. Plasma physics might not ring a bell for anyone on the street, but many science fiction movies and televis...

  • Nashua Post Office Survives, But Hours Cut

    Sandy Laumeyer, Courier Correspondent|Apr 16, 2014

Under the Post Plan, the U.S. Post Office has closed a number of community post offices and reduced hours for smaller towns. The plan was developed as an alternative to closing the smaller post offices. On Thursday, April 4, Rhonda Mailey, who oversees post offices with the 592 ZIP Codes, conducted one such meeting to discuss the fate of the Nashua Post Office. Nashua area residents in attendance were unanimous in stating they did not want to see the post office close. It will not. Effective Saturday, May 17, the Nashua Post Office will be...

  • Bridge To Somewhere

    Virgil Vaupel, Thanks For Listening|Apr 16, 2014

The bridge spanning Beaver Creek on the Milk River Road west of Hinsdale was built in 1915 and has been re-planked a few times over the years, but not much else has been done to it in the past 99 years. Countless school bus trips have traversed this structure carrying hundreds of school children into Hinsdale. Ranchers and farmers have used this bridge to move some of their smaller farming equipment, and the occasional herd of cattle from one side of the creek to the other. The Hinsdale...

  • Canceled: Lewistown Bison Discussion

    MT FWP|Apr 16, 2014

State wildlife officials canceled a planned discussion that was to take place in Lewistown on Tuesday, April 15 and Wednesday, April 16, on a bison conservation and management plan for Montana. Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks had invited a diverse group of interests and a number of state and community leaders to continue to participate in a facilitated public discussion in Lewistown. That gathering, which would have been the second since September, is canceled. “We worked to gather a large group of fundamentally different interests and c...

  • Bison Would Trample Us

    Rick Ripley--Montana State Senator, Political Opinion|Apr 16, 2014

A Montana district court recently ruled that Montana laws dealing with the wild or domestic status of bison are “ambiguous.” Those laws certainly are complicated, and for good reason. The Montana legislature has purposely given joint jurisdiction over bison to our state’s livestock and wildlife agencies because bison pose a unique management situation. They pose a dire threat to Montana’s livestock industry because much of the Yellowstone bison herd carries the dangerous disease brucellosis. But more than that, bison have the capacity to do a...

  • The Promise Of Easter

    Sandy Laumeyer, Just A Thought|Apr 16, 2014

Easter is almost upon us. As I read of several different ways to dye Easter eggs, my mind drifted back to Easter when I was growing up. Children were up just as early on Easter Sunday as they were on Christmas morning because they just knew that the Easter bunny had left sweet treats all over the house, but they had to find them. It was always a race to see who could find the most candy. However, the rule was only one or two pieces of candy could be eaten before breakfast. It was so hard to see the container that held what had just been found...

  • Toilet Paper Getting Wiped Out?

    Gwen Cornwell, Remember When|Apr 16, 2014

This is for those gracious readers who noticed I did not have an article in last week’s issue. I honestly tried. I was out of town, took my laptop with me, had to call my son to figure out how to access the motel internet, thought I sent my article to Jim, and found out technology beat me again. OK readers, this is what you would have gotten last week – and I think I will stick with the old stuff from now on. We have spent a lot time remembering things from years ago and then briefly touched on modern technology last week. Many Courier rea...

  • Walleyes Bazaar & Banquet The Catch Of The Day

    Quinn Robinson, The Courier|Apr 16, 2014

The Valley Event Center was packed with vendors from wall to wall this past Saturday as the Glasgow/Fort Peck chapter of Walleyes Unlimited held it's annual bazaar. Newly elected President of the local chapter, Seth Morehouse said that an event of this magnitude takes months of preparation. "We have 52 vendors here at the bazaar this year which is right around normal for us," Morehouse said. The real highlight of the event took place later in the evening as a banquet was put on by the chapter...

  • The Guns Come Out

    Quinn Robinson, The Courier|Apr 16, 2014

It was a busy weekend for gun collectors and enthusiasts alike as the Glasgow Gun Show was held this past weekend at the Glasgow Civic Center. This is the third consecutive year that the show has been organized by Al Kwasinski. Kwasinski, a member of the Weapons Collectors of Montana, said that organizing an event like this takes months of planning. "When the vendors leave here today, a lot of them will tell me to book them for next year," Kwasinski said. He pointed out that for those who don't...

  • Glasgow Bats Come Alive In Opener

    Quinn Robinson, The Courier|Apr 16, 2014

With a new season underway, the Glasgow Scottie softball team wasted little time to continue the type of play that they have been known for the past few seasons. The Scotties opened up the season against Miles City on April 10 with an impressive 7-1 victory. Shyla Bergtoll got the win for Glasgow going five innings and allowing only one hit while recording five strikeouts. The lone sore spot on her stat line is the four walks she allowed, but as the season progresses, Bergtoll should not have many more games with that amount of walks. Wrapping...

  • Junior High Track And Field: Porcupine Invitational At Glasgow

    Quinn Robinson, The Courier|Apr 16, 2014

The Porcupine Invitational was held this past weekend at Glasgow High School as 19 junior high teams competed in what was less than ideal weather conditions. Glasgow was unable to clinch the top spot in either boys or girls team scores, but they still had a respectable showing nonetheless with the girls taking second overall and the boys coming in third. On the girls side of the events, Glasgow saw Emily Kolstad take first in the 200 with a time of 30.4 seconds. The Scotties continued to see suc...
