In Tuesday’s municipal elections, voters in Glasgow and Nashua decided to change the names at the top. Our family has two boys playing football for the Huntley Project Red Devils. We wanted to let you know how impressed we were with the players, staff and fans of Glasgow during our playoff game Saturday. As fans, we were greeted with smiles and friendly conversation throughout the afternoon. Later we learned that your team brought snacks to our team bus for the ride home--what an unexpected treat! We were directed to the "visiting team" area of the stands and received advance notice about the student section where kids would be standing... Full story

  • Plans In Place To Salute Vets On Their Day

    Jim Orr, Courier Publisher|Nov 6, 2013

Option A was landing a big name keynote speaker. That didn’t happen, so Option B it will be. A group of speakers will be featured during next Monday’s Veterans Day ceremony at the Glasgow Civic Center. “It could be interesting,” Adjutant Joe Yeoman of American Legion Post 41 told The Courier. “That’s what it’s about. Make it interesting so people want to come. We’re doing this to make a change, do something different. And everybody’s invited. You don’t have to be a veteran.” But the speakers will be. Yeoman said they’ll...

  • Go Ahead, Make Your Day

    Sandy Laumeyer, Just A Thought|Nov 6, 2013

The past few weeks, thoughts on many subjects have been swirling through my mind. So I decided I’d list a few of those thoughts. A few days ago, I saw a headline that intrigued me so I checked out the article. The headline read, “Marriage isn’t for you.” Going through the article, I felt admiration for the gentleman who wrote it. He related how after meeting his wife while in high school, and their being best friends for 10 years, led to them deciding to marry. However, as their wedding day approached, he began wondering if he’d made...

  • Parke's Grocery

    Gwen Cornwell, Remember When|Nov 6, 2013

This "remember" was sent to me from a reader, former Glasgow resident Laura Knight Haefer of Billings, in response to my recent writings on grocery stores from years ago. Laura reminisces here about Parke's Grocery, which operated about 1½ blocks from Southside School: "I remember very well growing up just three and a half blocks from our little neighborhood grocery store. Yes, Parke's Grocery was three and a half blocks from our family home at the dike. The David Parke family lived in the southern part of the building and his...

Have I got a deal for you! I have this really big cardboard box for sale. It’s 34 yards long, 15 yards deep and 62 yards wide. It’s a really big box. It’s kinda like, “What’s behind Door No. 2.” I’m not going to tell you what’s in the box until you sign up for my deal. You could lose all the money and prizes you have accumulated so far if you choose wrongly. I will tell you that it’s something you and your family really, really need to have. It will save you lots of money. If you already have a box but aren’t satisfied with...

  • A Letter To Ranchers On Hunters, Buffalo

Howard Pippin, Letter To the Editor|Nov 6, 2013

Dear Editor: This is an open letter to all of the ranchers and farmers that have posted their land for no hunting or trespassing in opposition to the Fish Wildlife and Parks wanting to bring Buffalo in for a game animal. I know you have done this to prove a point, and there are hunters from outside our state and area that would like to see buffalo on your land, but in your rush to judgment you also have excluded those hunters who are your friends and also attended the stop-buffalo meetings and wrote letters to protest the buffalo. Surely you...

Earning the title of conference champions was a goal the Scottie volleyball team had been striving to achieve all season. With just one loss on the season, the girls were indeed crowned champions and headed into the District 2-B Tournament with a first place seed. Their first opponent was Wolf Point, a tough team that always puts the Scotties to the test in a long, tough contest – and this meeting was no exception. The ever-strong Wolves battled and almost won the match in four games before th... Full story

  • Scotties Hunt Down Devils

    Karissa Liebelt, For The Courier|Nov 6, 2013

It was a chilly and windy day at Scottie Field on Saturday. Hopes and expectations were high among both teams hoping to continue their playoff run. The Huntley Project Red Devils traveled to town to take on the Glasgow Scotties. With the bleachers nearly full, the two teams took the field. The PAT kick by Valentin Robert was good, which...

  • Hinsdale/Saco Wildfire Extinguished At District

    Virgil Vaupel, Courier Correspondent|Nov 6, 2013

The Wildfire played hard and fought hard for every point in the district tournament, but they just weren’t in sync and had peaked a month early. It was a joy to watch these young ladies go through the season with their great athleticism and zeal. Coach Kathy Siroky brought them a long way this season. She didn’t have a real answer for the way it ended, as none of the fans did either. It just is what it is. The best team does not always win. A good start in the early season gave the Hinsdale/Saco Wildfire a good push into October, and in...
