  • Along for the Ride

    James Walling, The Courier|Nov 4, 2015

Glasgow newcomer Carlos Valle introduced himself in the full dark of an early morning on Wednesday, Oct. 28, as we stood shivering in front of The Loaded Toad coffee shop downtown. We were waiting for local photographer Sean R. Heavey to take us, well, neither one of us was really sure about that part. "No idea," Valle told me with a grin when pressed about our agenda and possible destination. "I'm just along for the ride." And it was a long ride indeed. We started out by setting up for the...

  • Clean Water Project Director Talks Keystone, Renewable Energy

    Patrick Burr, The Courier|Nov 4, 2015

In a broad field 45 miles from Billings, wind turbines churn, culling energy to be distributed throughout the region. Montana ranks 21st in the nation, according to the American Wind Energy Association, with 466 functioning wind turbines. These machines converted enough energy in 2014 to power 180,000 homes, representing 6.5 percent of all in-state electricity production. “Wind is a viable, sustainable source of power,” said Derf Johnson, Clean Water Project Director and Staff Attorney for Montana Environmental Information Center (MEIC), “an...

    Tess Fahlgren, For The Courier|Nov 4, 2015

At 5:00 in the morning on Wednesday, Oct. 28, 16 Nashua High School Students met in the Bergie's parking lot to take part in the 30th Annual Red Ribbon Run. There, tribal members from Poplar smudged and prayed over the participants and gave them half of a sacred hoop to carry eastward, where it could be completed with sections from other participating teams. Then, the cold students began to run. The group streamed along the highway with a school bus and a police escort. Runners wore bright...

  • Are They Willing: Part II of III

    Mary Honrud, Sowing Notions|Nov 4, 2015

The pro-lifers claim those unwanted children could be adopted by others. That’s also not easy to arrange, either by the mother-to-be, nor by those looking to adopt. Here in Montana, lawyers must be involved, and we all know how cheaply they work. If the birth mother is under the age of 18, she must have her own lawyer. She cannot sign a relinquishment and consent to adopt order until at least 72 hours after giving birth. She must also undergo at least three hours of counseling by the Department of Health and Human Services, or the adoption a...

  • Where Are We Now?

Becky Erickson and Rob Kompel, City of Glasgow|Nov 4, 2015

Cherry Creek & Milk River Levee System is a vital piece of the city’s infrastructure system that is not only critical to the welfare and safety of our community but also bogged down in federal regulation. An array of complex issues and opinions as to the solutions necessary to keep the levee system in compliance and meeting the needs of the community keep the levee system at the forefront of the city’s attention. The southernmost portion of the city of Glasgow borders the Milk River and Cherry Creek waterways and the associated flood pla...

  • No National I.D., Thanks

    Jim Elliott, Montana Viewpoint|Nov 4, 2015

Recently the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) granted Montana an extension of time to conform to the “REAL ID” law passed by Congress in 2005. In a nutshell the REAL ID law demanded that state driver license and identification cards conform to federal requirements concerning information and data sharing as laid out by DHS, and that these identification documents have the approval of DHS. Only state issued identification documents that met DHS standards would be valid for entrance to Federal Buildings (I hope the Post Office was not one of...

  • Spot Those Collection Boxes

    Sandy Laumeyer, Just A Thought|Nov 4, 2015

By the time the sun set on Dec. 28, 1983, it had started to sink in that my family and I were homeless. We had found shelter with my husband’s parents. The reason we were homeless was because we’d lost our house and everything we had in it, other than the clothes on our backs, to fire. The morning after the fire my husband said, “I just realized we don’t even own a comb so we can comb our hair.” Basic needs. A comb, a toothbrush, a change of clothing, a washcloth and towel, shampoo, soap. Thanks to the generosity of our community, we soon foun...

  • Film Shorts: Valley Cinemas, Streaming, The Worx

    D.K. Holm, For The Courier|Nov 4, 2015

Valley Cinemas is offering two films this week, Spectre and The Peanuts Movie. One of the interesting phenomena surrounding the James Bond movies is that viewers, or at least one viewer, have the feeling that they had just seen one a few months ago. Now the latest Bond film, Spectre, is here and it comes as something of a surprise that its predecessor, Skyfall, was released way back in 2012, during the last Olympics and when there was a Queen Jubilee, Arab Spring, a Mars rover, and Argo was the best picture ever made. Like Beatles songs,...

  • Scotties Romp Through 2B District Tournament

    Lori Dailey, For The Courier|Nov 4, 2015

Hosting the District Volleyball Tournament comes with some perks: home-cooked meals, less missed school and familiar beds. But this year the biggest advantage has to be hometown support. Throughout the entire season and now into play-offs, the Glasgow fans have been loud and proud. Their efforts have carried considerable weight in the hearts of the Scottie girls who have periodically been dismissed due to their lack of size but who have fought tirelessly to prove that it's the size of the heart...

  • Glasgow Slain By Spartans in Playoff Rematch

    Patrick Burr, The Courier|Nov 4, 2015

Glasgow mustered enough fight on Halloween night to avoid repeating the shutout of Sept. 11, but the red and white's six points crumpled as a paper shield under Baker's iron-toothed, 47-point onslaught. The Scotties second trip to the Spartans' turf mirrored the first in all but the 42-0 scoreline - though not by much did the two portraits differ. "We played hard," said coach Greg Liebelt, "but in the end we were overmatched, and made too many mistakes on both sides of the football to affect...

  • Even in Region Six, Be Bear Aware

    MT FWP|Nov 4, 2015

Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks and the Bureau of Land Management would like outdoor enthusiasts to be “Bear Aware,” even in Region 6. Although bear encounters are rare in most of Region 6, there are currently some bears present in the Little Rockies and the Bears Paw Mountains. In addition, bears are occasionally found wandering far from their traditional areas, and preventative measures should always be taken to prevent wildlife encounters. FWP recently relocated a black bear that was rummaging through garbage cans at Camp Creek campground,...
