School boards in Valley County are preparing for school elections in early May this year. While all districts have at least one trustee position open, there haven’t been many signing up to serve on their local board. Valley County Commissioners meet for discussion and decision every Wednesday at 10:30 a.m. The public is always invited to attend. During the month of February they had several items on the agenda. Shoe repair shops? Not many of us remember when it was common to have a shoe repair shop located on one of the main streets of your community. I have been told there were a total of four located in Glasgow. I am going out on the limb to say I am pretty sure that was four at the same time. Transmittal (halftime) has come and gone, and now today (March 16) is the 54th day of the session. The House bills are coming over in droves to the Senate. The BIG discussions will be the Medicaid expansion or various plans, and the budget. The House is taking up the budget (HB2) this week. Ruth (Erickson) Bauer, 94, of Williston, N.D., died peacefully at her home on Monday, March 9, 2015. She was born on Dec. 15, 1920, to Emile and Inga (Christenson) Erickson on their family homestead about 7 miles south of Grenora, N.D. She attended local country schools for eight years in both North Dakota and Montana. The family farm was located right on the border of the two states. The Glasgow Ice Dawg Bantams took their turn at the Montana Amateur Hockey Association Bantam B State Tournament in Havre last weekend, going 2-1-1 to place second after coming in with a 4-11-1 record. Year 17 is shaping up like a real diaper dandy for hundreds of young players at this weekend's Jeff Jurgens Memorial Basketball Tournament. The 84 teams, including nine from Regina, Sask., exceed last year's total of about 80 and will compete at five Glasgow venues. This photo is taken at the train depot on "registration day" that was to take place at the county courthouse in 1913. Homesteaders flocked from all over towards "free land." The land came with strings attached. The Courier covered a large story of registration and drawing names of 1.6 million acres of the Fort Peck Indian Reservation for homesteading.
