  • GHS Class of 2013 – Small But Proud

    Samar Fay, Courier Editor|May 29, 2013

Escorted by kilt-clad junior honor students, they walked in two by two, the Glasgow High School graduating class of 2013, the white-robed girls carrying red flowers, the boys in red wearing white boutonnieres. As Andy Gardner, the class representative, told them in his Senior Address, their class of 47 graduates is the smallest class since 1930, and the smallest from this school building. Seventeen of them started kindergarten together. Seniors are graduating all over the country but today, he... Full story

  • Hail Storms Hit Or Miss Across County; Rain Record Set

    Samar Fay, Courier Editor|May 29, 2013

If you were in it, like Glasgow was Saturday evening, the hail storm was bad. But only some areas were hit while most others escaped. Glasgow was subjected to a heavy downpour that turned into pea-size and larger hail after 7 p.m. It was a record rain for the date, 1.53 inches, and it didn’t take long to create flash flooding. Although not as bad as the storm of 2007, tender plants were destroyed and some tree leaves were stripped and washed into storm drains, causing jams. The underpass was...

  • Saluting The Fallen

    Samar Fay, Courier Editor|May 29, 2013

Valley County residents joined many others across America in a ceremony of remembrance on Monday, Memorial Day. They met in the Civic Center to honor those in the military who have died in the service of their country. Connie Schultz, who retired from the Army Nurse Corps as a lieutenant colonel, was the keynote speaker. “Memorial Day is not just about picnics,” she said. Schultz talked about the many ways to remember the fallen, now numbering one million men and women since the beginning...

  • Vandals Damage City Pool Building, Break Kiwanis Swim Trophies

    Samar Fay, Courier Editor|May 29, 2013

City employees discovered a mess at the Glasgow city pool last week. The Recreation Department secretary called police at about 6 a.m. on Tuesday, May 21, saying an employee just told her the pool had been “destroyed.” Officers found every light fixture in the building broken, 21 of them. In the lifeguard lounge, everything on the shelves had been dumped off. Perhaps the worst was the many trophies won by the Kiwanis Swim Team over the years, thrown to the floor. Many were broken. The...

    May 29, 2013

Riders will notice a restructure in pricing starting in July when they ride the Valley County Transit. The Valley County Transit Board this month made the decision to restructure the cost for rides. The rate has remained the same since 1997, and was due for a change, officials said. Changes will go into effect on July 1, and will affect the rides during normal business hours Monday through Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. All rides in Glasgow will be $1, and monthly passes increase to $40. Fort Peck and Nashua riders will pay $3 per ride and... Full story

  • Who Are Essential Gov't Workers?

    Virgil Vaupel, Thanks For Listening|May 29, 2013

A few years ago I was trucking my way around Washington, D.C. in a snowstorm of Biblical proportions. A voice came over my radio saying, “ All non-essential government employees need not report to work today due to the inclement weather conditions”. Are you like me, thinking, just who are these “non-essentials drawing a government paycheck every two weeks for doing, by government admission, essentially, nothing essential. I made a few phone calls and discovered, through a few honest... Full story

  • Drinking The Kool-Aid

    Gwen Cornwell, Remember When|May 29, 2013

Kool-Aid, Kook-Aid, tastes great, Kool-Aid Kool-Aid, can’t wait! Do you remember that slogan? You may also remember the nice frosty pitcher in the advertisement with the smiley face drawn on it. Does anyone still keep a pitcher of Kool-Aid in the fridge for all the youngsters and sometimes adults, or has that been replaced with Gatorade and other flavored waters? Remember when that was one of the first things Mother allowed you to make? We must have drank gallons of the stuff – and that was before “sugar free.” That was before anyone... Full story

  • HB 218 The Right Thing To Do For Eastern Montana

Will Deschamps, Montana GOP Party Chairman|May 29, 2013

It comes as no surprise that much of the budget surplus that Montana has enjoyed for the last eight years has come from energy and natural resource development. Oil and gas efforts across Montana, especially our eastern most counties, has provided opportunity across the state and revenue flows to help fund our government services on the state and local level. It comes with surprise and dismay that Governor Bullock chose to veto a strong bipartisan bill, HB 218, which provides much needed assistance to our eastern residents. There is no...

  • Dangerous Misconceptions About Wild Bison On The CMR

    Sierra Dawn Stoneberg-Holt, My Opinion|May 29, 2013

In the May 13 Great Falls Tribune, Tom France wrote, “The million-acre Charles M. Russell National Wildlife Refuge, ideal native prairie bison habitat ... likely will emerge as the best possible site – and perhaps the only viable location – for restoring an ecologically significant bison herd” and “the vast majority of Montanans ... believe our vast grasslands retain space for wild bison.” These are understandable, but dangerous misconceptions. Northeastern Montana prairies (the CMR is a lake, not a prairie) historically are high...

  • Dailey Wins The Day

    J. Levi Burnfin, Courier Sports|May 29, 2013

Clearing her final high jump gave Megan Dailey not only the event state title, but also her Scottie girls a spot on the podium. The high jump, one of the last events of the day at the Class B State Meet in Bozeman on Friday and Saturday, looked to be anybody’s event to win with five to six girls coming in with season-best marks of 5 feet, 2 inches, the same personal record for Dailey. “I wasn’t really expecting [to win],” said Dailey. “I was really hoping to place but I didn’t think... Full story

  • Errors, Key Injury Cost Scottie Softball

    J. Levi Burnfin, Courier Sports|May 29, 2013

Nothing went the way it was supposed to for the Scottie girls. In their third-straight trip to state, everything was set up to achieve Glasgow’s ultimate goal, a state title. Instead, a rash of errors, mistakes and one big injury cost the Scottie girls two straight losses and an early exit on Friday. “When you go to the state tournament, you have to bring your A-game every game. When you don’t, that’s what happens,” said Head Coach Mark Falcon. The Scottie girls played well in their...

    J. Levi Burnfin, Courier Sports|May 29, 2013

Experience was the key for Tamrah Pewitt and Makkell Baillargeon in their rounds in Bigfork. Pewitt and Baillargeon, both sophomores, shot their first rounds of state golf at the Class B tournament on May 21-22 at the Eagle Bend Golf Course. “The biggest thing was, they’re young golfers and they got a quality experience,” said Head Coach Dave Riggin. “And they improved the second day, which is what we were looking for.” Pewitt started her tournament with a 127 on Tuesday, the first...

  • Hinsdale Represents Area Class C At State

    J. Levi Burnfin, Courier Sports|May 29, 2013

A pair of Raiders scored the only points for area schools at the Class C State Meet in Laurel on Friday and Saturday. Fresh off a five-event sweep at districts and divisionals, Bethany Lacock ran into some tough competition from the other parts of the state. She was still able to place in three events, scoring all 10.33 points for the Lady Raiders, but did not take gold in any. Lacock, a junior, was fourth in the 100-meter hurdles, finishing in 16.43 seconds. She took home the bronze in the... Full story

  • Champs Return For Cat Classic

    J. Levi Burnfin, Courier Sports|May 29, 2013

It’s not exactly set up as a tournament of champions, but the 14th annual Glasgow Catfish Classic sure looks like it will be just that. In the 13 previous tournaments, 10 different teams have taken home the title of best catfish duo. Seven of those teams are still together and are in the tournament field on Saturday. An eighth championship duo, Cole Plouff and Mitch McIntyre in 2006, are in the tournament but are now with other partners. “It’s quite simply the best field we’ve had,...
