Students at Irle Elementary got a vision of the past when it came to the good old school days. Not one to circle the wagons to have a jamboree in his honor, Marlen Halverson was excited in the last week to be a part of something pretty big. The last Glasgow School District Board meeting held a lot of updates about the elementary school construction taking shape. There was goofy dancing, shouting competitions and a lot of jazz, rock and roll, and country shaking the Elks Lodge on Saturday, Jan. 31. With a slight change in tune, the Glasgow Chamber of Commerce brought in some professional dueling pianists to ring in the new year, new board and president. It was a huge success. Over two decades with only small changes led to a much bigger change taking place locally. Valley View Home saw a little shakeup in September when Health Management Services stepped in to help turn things around for the full time care facility. Administrator Kandi Svenningson explained that the building had been running on a budget and with some policies that hadn't changed in around 20 years. It was a hurdle finally jumped on Thursday, Jan. 29. The U.S. Senate finally passed the Keystone XL Pipeline bill with enough votes to overcome a veto. The final count was 62-36 and Sen. Jon Tester did vote in favor of the pipeline in the end. With amendments added to the bill it will have to travel back to the House and get final approval. The House passed the bill earlier in January, but there weren't enough votes to overcome a veto. A total of 67 votes will be needed to override a presidential veto. The Eastern B-C Divisional awaits on Saturday in Shepherd. It's the ultimate measuring stick so far to see how far the reinvigorated Scottie mat program has come this season. The Scotsmen measured up well last weekend at the Malta Invitational. They placed third among the 14 teams, as high as they could have expected. Some days my mind is just so filled with the present that I forget about the past. However, today I spent some time looking at the painting of Glasgow, 1914, that is located in the lobby of the courthouse. What really interested me were the buildings that remain standing to this day. For quite a long time now immigration has been a hot topic in our nation. There are so many facets to this it is extremely difficult to address all of them. In reading article after article concerning immigration, I was reminded of all four of my grandparents who were immigrants. My mother's parents arrived here from Croatia. As I sit here reading through the amendments to the U.S. Constitution one thing jumps out at me in the First Amendment. Here's how it reads: Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech or of the press. The conundrum here is that I don't see where it is written “unless the speech or the press offends someone.” Seems anymore our freedom of speech has deteriorated from its original purpose. The last few decades in Montana have seen a remarkable recovery in wildlife populations. For example, Montana’s elk population was down to almost 20,000 animals in 1940. By 1970 it had increased somewhat to 55,000. But after that we’ve seen rapid growth to nearly 160,000 animals today. That’s simply an astounding recovery. Stuber, 97, died Saturday, Jan. 31, 2015, at the Frances Mahon Deaconess Hospital in Glasgow, Mont He was born on Oct. 22, 1917, in his grandmother's house in Thoeny, Mont., the son of Albert and Dorothea (Thoeny) Stuber. Robert G. Combs, 76, passed away from natural causes on Tuesday, Jan. 27, 2015, at his home in Glasgow, Mont. He was born on Dec. 29, 1938, in Glasgow, the son of Clinton and Irene (Breikjern) Combs.
